Dr Isabel Emslie, Lady Hutton
(1887-1960)
by Henry Charles Bevan Petman
1894-1980)
Pastel on paper, 1946
During the First World War, Dr Isabel Emslie worked for the Scottish Women's Hospitals (SWH) in France, Macedonia, Greece and Serbia. After graduating in medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1910, she practised at hospitals in Stirling and Edinburgh before joining the SWH in 1915. Along with the other women medical volunteers, she performed all types of activity including: surgery, carpentry, sanitation and scavenging. This portrait shows Dr Emslie in the uniform of the Indian Red Cross - she was Director of the organisation's Welfare Service 1938-46
Bequeathed by Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Jacomb Hutton 1981
(PG 2478). Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig
(1861-1928)
by John Singer Sargent
oil on canvas, painted between 1919 and 1922.

PG 1010. Purchased in 1925.

The information and interpretation panel for this portrait spells Haig’s rank incorrectly and refers to World War One (a term not known to Haig and his contemporaries). It makes an attempt to explain the controversies around the military conduct of the First World War, but ultimately fails to get to the heart of the issues of scale, new technology and Britain’s utterly exceptional role in the conduct of the Allied war effort.

Haig appears as if in his prime. John Singer Sargent, the foremost portraitist of the time, has chosen to emphasise his ‘best’ ‘Victorian’ qualities presenting a ‘beau sabreur’. A soldier in tartan trews and black uniform jacket with a pace stick in one hand and his side cap in the other. He has medal ribbons and sits on an upright chair.

Charles Kenneth Scott-Moncrieff (1889-1930)
by Edward Mercer
oil on canvas, painted between 1914 and 1918
Distinguished scholar and linguist, Scott-Moncrieff is best known for his translation of Marcel Proust's À la Recherche du Temps Perdu.
Here he wears the uniform of the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He served on the Western Front from 1914 to 1917 and was wounded when leading his men in an attack at the Battle of Arras. He was permanently lamed as a result. Wounded and suffering from shell-shock, he was withdrawn from active service and awarded the Military Cross. In 1918, he took up a position in the War Office at Whitehall.

PG 2199.
Purchased in 1972

Happy Birthday Rin Tin Tin! (Approximate date.) Acclaimed 1920s movie star. Rescued in the rubble of a village abandoned by the retreating Germans during the Saint-Mihiel Offensive. Nursed to health by his new master, he returned with him to the US and became a Hollywood legend.
