#WIPSnip 10/01: 'injured' for 'injury'

WIP: WrestlingBrands

I knew immediately this was going to be the one that came up when i search my drafts for this word. 😅

#writingcommunity #writesky #ttrpg #ttrpgdesign #wip

Wrestling is a dangerous business. No matter how carefully planned a match is or how many
times you’ve practiced a move, something can always go wrong. You won’t be surprised when it
happens, but your character could end up getting seriously injured and needing to be removed
from active play. If this happens, you can create and introduce a new character to play, you can
continue as a supporting character that has already been introduced, or you can keep playing
without a character, asking and answering questions and participating in the games that call for
an audience

#WIPSnip

Injury -> Injured

Tala, already frustrated by getting the runaround trying to get to an authority figure with some very important information, becomes aware of her partner being injured via magic necklace and promptly loses interest in anything else.

#WriteSky #WritingCommunity

She wanted to scratch someone's eyes out. Or scream. Both would suit her just fine. Instead she said as calmly she could,
"What about Gate Captain Aman? Is he here?"
"Oh, aye." Bett's voice brightened while Malla nodded her own encouragement. "He's up in his office, we'll take you to him."
"Good, there's something he really needs to hear..."
The feeling of several people standing on her chest, each one driving a shard of ice into her heart, stopped Tala in her tracks.
Her vision blacked around the edges, she struggled to breathe, and could not hear anything past the ringing in her ears. The pressure drove her down to her knees, then onto one hand as her other grasped at her chest. After an eternity she managed to choke out a breath, and another. The world seemed to be rocking back and forth, like a ship on choppy waters.
"... -y Tala? Lady Tala!" Mella crouched next to her, shaking her shoulders, panic painted across her face. It occurred to Tala then that she was screaming in between her choppy breaths. "Lady Tala, what's wrong?!"
Her mouth shut with a click of her teeth, fell to the side to sit on the ground. She clawed at her shirt, ripping it open hard enough that several buttons went flying off in various directions. Bett covered his eyes and turned around, but she paid him no mind. She snatched at the necklace hanging down her chest, the one Reka had given her after they'd told each other they loved the other. Solonathrax had told them it would tell them if the other was ever in trouble...
And it was cracked.Directly down the center of the gem there was a crack. The white mist beyond didn't leak out, but it felt like it should have.
She stared at the pendant for a second that lasted an age, and then slowly the top and bottom began to knit back together.
She didn't know what that meant, but the crack and the pain could only mean one thing.
Reka was in danger.
That thought shut out everything else. Reka, hundreds of miles away, was in danger. Probably grievously injured if the pain she'd felt was anything to go by. Weeks away by horseback even if she rode a hundred of them to death. Days by wyvern flight.
She needed to know more, what was happening right now.
She didn't have the power to see across that distance, but she knew someone who did.
Tala leapt to her feet, bowling over Mella still crouched over her. Other Guardsmen and Women had come out of the barracks, drawn by her screaming, and formed a loose semi circle around them. She shoved past all of them without a word, ears pinned back and teeth bared. She didn't remember letting her nails out, but if any of them were fool enough to get in her way now, a scratch was a light price to pay.
Once she escaped the press of bodies, she ignored Bett and Mella calling her name and sprinted faster than she had ever run in her life towards Henet's apartment.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'injury' - after a frightening disappearance and alleged head trauma, Bekah begins to act bizarrely out of touch with her own vanishing. Slowly, it begins to unnerve her closest friend who begins to wonder what's really going on.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'injury' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring the word of the day - Carefully, I slid my cell phone out of my pocket and angled myself behind a student sitting a row down in front of me. Bekah had replied to almost every statement, ranting to me about how stupid it all was. Rolling my eyes knowing she'd never see it, I couldn't help but wonder what was going through her head. For God's sake, she was one of the reasons for the curfew. She sure must've had a traumatic head injury for how thoughtless she could be about it all.

With all the instances of Heiden talking about her experience as a guard, I actually chose to talk about the guards in Volla instead for today's #WIPSnip.

“Are all your guards clergy?” The woman asked as she untied her horse.

“Yeah. Well, monks technically,” Aldous said quietly, then nodded toward the six-story stone monastery near his stable, clearly visible from town, “To be a part of the militia, you must take the monk vows. It’s supposed to prevent corruption among those meant to guard us.”

“Is it the same true for stable masters?”

“No.” Aldous needed to emphasize how much he was not a monk. “I’m an acolyte employed by the cult. I could take the vows, but then I would have to give up money and bedsports.”

Not that he was getting much of either.

“Hmm.” was all the stranger said as she took in the information.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'guard' and oh boy this is where my readers will want to guard their hearts. A moment of rare frankness between Katie and Bekah sheds light on their unspoken devotion towards each other, and perhaps more.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #QueerWriters

The WIP Snip Word of the Day is 'guard' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring the word of the day - "Do we mix?"

"Don't we?" I asked rhetorically.

Bekah looked like she wanted to correct something but Amber, Rhys, and Lucas came around the corner to the tune of Amber's booming laugh. Craning my neck, I saw them raising their plastic glasses of punch and dancing together in our direction. I looked back to Beck but she had turned her head away, like the timing caught her off guard. A whisper of intuition made me wonder if there was something deeper in the meaning but I had to remind myself that my favorite pastime was overthinking.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'well' - this is an excerpt from the opening of my third act where the familiar and fond mountains take a dark turn when led deep within, far from any recognizable place.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'well' - the following is an excerpt of my novel WIP Canary featuring the word of the day - The further Bekah's dad drove us out into the country the more uneasy I felt. Familiar land marks faded until we were deep in the rolling valley backed against the rising slopes of the worn peaks of the Smoky Mountains. Next to me in the back seat, Bekah gripped my hand tightly as I rested my palm against the well loved fabric bench seat. Eyes flickering through the scenery, I was desperate to find anything I could recognize. Even the Little River faded behind us as we hauled out to the mysterious farm of Bekah's grandmother.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'prime' and this word is a rare chance to show off a scene in one of my MC's classes. However, few things in my story are just filler. Shout out to the zany and wild teacher of mine from high school who I based this character off of. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'prime' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring the word of the day - "What happened to Remus, then?" A girl in the front asked, drumming her black painted fingernails against the desk.

"The most predictable thing happened, a story older than the Bible. Beloved brothers turned afoul, driven by jealousy and greed."

"He got Abeled," a boy in the back hooted, sending a wave of disappointed boos and laughter through the audience. Our teacher, ever savvy, rolled with the punches like a skilled comedian.

"In a way!" She agreed emphatically. "Romulus and his brother argued where their great empire would be, but he didn't just kill his brother over prime real estate. Remus made the fatal error of invoking the gods."

Cobeah is too haunted by the blood she spilled to sleep. It will never feel necessary, even though it was. Tomorrow will show her what winning the crown has already cost: the realm, her family, and most of all, herself.

#WIPSnip from QUEEN FOR A DAY
#AmWriting #DarkFantasy #WriteSky #MythicFantasy

Now alone before the doors of the royal suite, Cobeah laid her umber hands, cerulean-hued at the edges, upon the silver handles. Her body resisted, as though her own limbs remembered The Water Thief’s defiance an hour past. Yet even he had bent, in the end. Together, they had borne Disaya’s corpse to the inner Royal Sanctum beneath the throne. Come the morrow, the Clepsydra would consecrate her in glory, even if they hated Cobeah for forcing the rite before moonrise. Disaya had known the cost of that too.

I have laid my dark deeds bare. Storms without end will come, but we must keep rowing onward, and I can only continue forward.

Her dour thoughts circled like sharks sniffing for blood in the shallows. She pushed the doors wide and stepped inside. The palace staff had already scoured the chamber clean since the last time she had seen it. The massive four-post bed, built piece by piece inside the suite, loomed like a throne of rest, and drew her toward sleep.

Never had a day stretched so long, nor seemed so dark. Not even her years at sea chasing Shione Lahiri aboard her infamous Tanim, nor the bloody eradication of corsairs from the Chantaran coast, had felt as long or as dark as this one. Her mind craved respite, and her body ached for a hot bath, but she forwent both and fell upon the bed still in her light seafaring armor. The miniature water clock beside the bed dripped on. Each drop represented a precious second of rest she needed, but sleep would not come easy, not tonight. For tomorrow would decide Chantara’s fate.

Tomorrow will show me if Disaya’s last request, her final wish, was ever within reach.

#WIPSnip only instance😢

. . . until all was quiet and he was completely alone. He was certain it was about him. He wanted to comfort them all, to promise that he was okay, that he would get better. But he couldn't. His senses were too delayed for him to even process anything while it was happening.

He'd heard his Mom crying, her voice angry and broken, and thought his parents were arguing, but he didn't process it until all was quiet and he was completely alone. He was certain it was about him. He wanted to comfort them all, to promise that he was okay, that he would get better. But he couldn't. His senses were too delayed for him to even process anything while it was happening.
He once even heard his little sister's voice, and a thrill of longing to be her brother again, to gently tease her and make her smile, swelled in his heart, though he was too weak to respond.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'delay' - this scene is a perfect high wire to show growing tension between Katie and Logan, but also hints at some unspoken feelings between the girls as well.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The WIP Snip Word of the Day is 'delay' - the following is a scene from my novel WIP Canary featuring the word of the day - Bekah stuck out her pinky towards me and shook it in my direction. I locked mine with hers, never blinking as I looked in her eyes and shook it affirmatively. I meant every word. The connection I felt with Bekah as a best friend was everything to me. I would kill Logan if he ever stole her light from this world. He didn't appreciate the amazing person he had. She'd been a permanent installment in his life so long that he'd forgotten her value.

After a long pause, Bekah kicked at the concrete. She twiddled her thumbs with her lips puckered as she looked around, as if delaying the inevitable. I could feel it coming, like I could read her mind. Around came her goofy grin and brows high on her forehead.

"Does that mean you'll come to the Homecoming dance, or…?"

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'observe' - a word and a major them in my story. Here, we see an experience of Katie's power as a medium who can live through memories of the dead but only in the space of her dreams.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'observe' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring the word of the day - When I opened my—her?—eyes, my back was against the trunk of a tall tree. I felt my body move on its own, the girl using my dreams to bring a memory to life. In that moment, I was nothing more than an observer through her eyes and body. A daring glance downward, and my stomach dropped with confusion. The girl who piloted my dreams was slender and lean. Her skin was smooth and perfectly unblemished. My scars did not carry with her. Her wrists were dainty, making her hands seem larger. Or maybe I was just used to being built with different proportions. I'd spent my whole life wishing I could be smaller but now that I was it felt sickening. I felt vulnerable in a way I couldn't describe.

Newly-met Elrond and Isildur had a meeting at noon and ran late touring Imladris. The shortcut was up the steep slope from the riverbank to the main house and they felt lively. Elrond, flat upon his porch, has just checked the sun to confirm they are on time.

He viewed it only briefly. Gil-galad obscured much of the sky. “Elrond Halfelven, Lord of Imladris, Regent of my kingdom,” he said, sounding like a put-upon parent.
“King Isildur, father of my grandchildren,” Elendil replied. “My adult grandchildren.”
“Some of them,” agreed Isildur, breathless. “Your responsible son also gave you a few.”
“Who won?” Elrond asked, looking from one to the other. He rose to his feet and brushed himself off.
“I don’t think brushing will help you,” Gil-galad observed. “Those clothes have seen better days, and that includes yesterday.”
“Did you defeat the thorn bushes?” Elendil asked clinically.
“Alas, we left an enemy behind us,” Isildur admitted. “They live to fight another day.”
“We escaped with our lives and our hopes intact, nonetheless,” Elrond said. “But who won?”
“I fear I cannot say. It seemed to me a draw, unless there was some term of combat regarding which part of the body struck the porch pavers first.”
“We did not get into such specifics, I must admit.”
Elendil turned to Gil-galad. “I did say they would get along.”
The High King sighed. “You did. And I agreed. I also said I wasn’t sure your kingdom or mine would survive the friendship.”

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'nation' - I went with 'national' here since I had limited options. This scene reveals Katie's thoughts at a vigil for the missing and presumed dead. There's a lot of guilt in being a survivor.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'nation' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring a related form of the word of the day - Echoing announcements came over the sound system calling fans to the stands. They were going to open the game with the national anthem, alma mater song, and a candle lighting ceremony where the life of Logan (Surname) would be honored. It felt weird that they were ignoring the others. As if their bodies being absent was enough to pleasantly float the foolish idea that they'd come home.

Optimism had always felt like self sabotage. I'd had so many wonderful things ripped out of my hands or from under my feet that I'd learned to cautiously walk around in life, anticipating the next horrible shock. As much as I tried fighting that instinct, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of dread whenever I looked at those missing posters. They felt living the way a memory does, not a moment. I knew they weren't coming home.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'meddle' - I had to get flexible here so I chose the word 'tampered' instead. Running from the cops is hard when they're next door.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'meddle' - I had to get flexible on an alternative word for this challenge prompt so I chose 'tampered' instead - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring the word 'tampered' - "You, uh… need a ride?" A familiar voice called as the passenger side window of the SUV rolled down.

Looking over with a face of pure dumbfounded shock I saw Detective Deer leaning across her seat towards me in her cruiser. Of course. Who else would it be? I sighed, admitting defeat, and walked over to her vehicle. Better to be forthcoming than put up another attitude. I could get away with it once, but I was not gonna bet twice on tampered dice.

Brishon is fighting to avenge the queen he called mother. His opponent is fighting the queen’s nightmares that refuse to stay buried. As rain turns the courtyard to mud, neither can find a way past grief.

#WIPSnip Tumble. #AmWriting #DarkFantasy #MythicFantasy #BookSky

She was dismantling him; piece by piece.

Brishon couldn’t let her. He launched himself into a wild, desperate tackle. They tumbled through mud and blood. Weapons clattered across the courtyard at their sides. Fists hammered open new wounds. They were too close for honed techniques. Just two grieving, furious creatures clawing for their own causes.

“I won’t let you kill me again. Not in life nor in my dreams,” she hissed in his ear as she climbed onto his back.

He had no time to parse the words. Pain ripped up his spine as she drove a quoit beneath the edge of his armor. He elbowed backward, smashing her face. She rolled away. Blood poured from the fresh gash across his back.

“It ends here, Brishon,” she said, swaying on her feet in the pouring rain. “Even if the mud takes us both.”

Still needs the next pass of editing, but the reveal of the garden. Oh, the garden (my dreams too girl). #wipsnip #writesky

At the top of the final steps, the wrought metal door swung open to sunlight. She narrowed her eyes against the late morning glow, and the unease stayed behind on the stair. For a breath, it was as though she had stepped through a portal into her own dreams.
They entered beneath a pergola dense with blooming jasmine, its perfume clinging to the air, almost tangible. The shade gave way to brightness, and beyond it the garden unfurled in a rush of color and scent. It was riotous, alive, spilling over itself in layered terraces of stone and soil. Everywhere she looked, green and bloom pressed close together, untamed and abundant. Nothing was clipped too carefully or placed with sterile precision. It was a space that seemed to grow according to its own design, tumbled and mingled in a harmony more vital than order, as though the place itself had chosen what belonged.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'tumble' but I had to go with 'stumble' on this one. A lighthearted scene as the girls race to class, and perhaps realize things about their friendship.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'tumble' - I didn't have this word in my WIP so I chose 'stumble' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring the word of the day - Without a word, Bekah took my hand into hers and pulled me towards the door. I didn’t think I’d ever get used to her touching me. She was a whirlwind of force and there was no telling her no. Having spent years of my life with passive, indecisive people in my life, her assuredness was a magnet.

Down the stairs we ran like a gust of wind, ducking and dodging past the kids slowly streaming into the music hall. I yelled that I couldn’t keep up and she just replied, confident as ever, “Yes, you can.” There was no weakness that couldn’t be overcome in her mind. I laughed as he stumbled and ran to our lockers, hastily grabbing things up as the bell rang overhead. Logan only managed to steal a kiss from Bekah as she waved goodbye, heading down towards her end of the school as I took the steps upwards to mine.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'meltdown' - An earlier scene of Katie and Bekah's friendship growing closer amidst a dying relationship in the background. Teen drama sets off our story with innocent friend drama until the story twists into something darker and more complex.
#WriteSky

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'meltdown' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary - "Please," she chuckled. "Don't be. I think it's cute. You get so turned around and embarrassed easily. Everyone is busy posturing because we're teenagers. Everyone's gotta be hot, cool, unique. I don't know. It's nice to see authenticity," she smiled warmly, sitting back in her seat with a heavy sigh. "Guess I won't give your barista friend a heart attack. Besides, I think Logan just got off work. You want a ride?"

"Oh, I mean, I can get my mom to grab me. You two deserve some time together."

"Nonsense," she shook her head. "He'd be happy to drive you home. Besides, I wouldn't ruin your day like having your *mom* come get you. Not after Emily's meltdown."

This #WIPSnip is from Z & S's first twitch stream, and wet bread has become a permanent in-world joke. #writesky I think Z is the easiest to write because he's just... so absurd. I love him.

“Query,” she purred, catching the light in her sunglasses as she tipped her head toward him. “What’s your most ridiculous fear?”
He made a sound that was half scoff, half wheeze, ducking an explosion and vaulting over a rail. “Right now? You asking me that while I’m mid fight.”
She smiled, the corner of her mouth tugging higher as she leaned into her own shoulder towards him. “I’m serious.”
“I’m also serious,” Zephyr muttered, lasering a mech midair. “But fine. Ridiculous fear? Losing a bet and having to eat wet bread on stream.”
Seren sat up, then turned her whole torso towards him, a broad grin across her face. “Wet bread?”
