Day 8: Was It All a Dream?

THE BIG SLEEP (1946)

A foot-tall plastic hammerhead shark-man wearing a Hello Kitty wristwatch and jorts, propping up the VHS of THE BIG SLEEP in my bed, with a shark-shaped pillow (named Sombrero) in the background The VHS hammerhead shark-man also needs a name, just sayingThe back of the box with the following plot blurb L.A. private eye Philip Marlowe (Humphrey Bogart) takes on a blackmail case... and nearly wears out his gumshoes following a trail peopled with murderers, pornographers, nightclub rogues, the spoiled rich, and more. If you get lost in the twists of this corkscrew plot, you're in good company. When co-screenwriter William Faulkner couldn't figure out the identity of one of the killers, he asked original author Raymond Chandler. And even he didn't know! But Marlowe solves it in hard-boiled style-- and style is what The Big Sleep is all about. Director Howard Hawks shshaoes the story with snappy character encounters and brisk pacing. In fact, the bold, sassy, atmospheric film holds up over repeat viewings and still reigns as the whodunit that established the style for generations of filmmakers.

Day 5: Food Fight!

FRIED GREEN TOMATOES (1991)

#VHSeptember2026 🎥🎦📽🎞🎬🎟🍿 #filmsky #moviesky

A foot-tall plastic hammerhead shark-man holding the VHS of FRIED GREEN TOMATOES in front of a bookshelfThe back of the box, with the plot blurb: Academy award winners Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy star with Mary Stuart Mazterson and Mary-Louise Parker in this heartwarming tale, based on Fannie Flagg's best-selling novel. A chance encounter in a nursing home between dowdy housewife Evelyn Couch (Bates) and spry octogenarian Ninny Threadgoode (Tandy) leads to an unexpected friendship. Ninny tells Evelyn an absorbing story of two women who lived half a century ago in the town of Whistle Stop: the fiercly independent Idgie (Materson) and the gentle Ruth (Parkerk). Idgie stands up to the Klan, Ruth's abusive husband, and a charge of murder in a time when a woman's place was considered the kitchen. Idgie's courage in the face of adversity inspires Evelyn to take a look at her own life and make drastic changes, often with hilarious results. It's the story of a friendship that defied all obstacles, a devotion that couldn't be broken, and a courage unlike any other. It's the story of a simpler time and the strength of the human spirit that still exists today.
