Monday came and so did lunch. We were having pizza that day, but calling it by that name was an insult to actual pizza. I don’t know who decided that a soggy cracker drizzled with tomato juice and topped with cheese byproduct that more closely resembled moist construction paper than anything that could be derived from a cow should be called ‘pizza’, but they deserved the most severe-ist of punishments for toying with so many children’s hearts at lunchtime. By the time my class was let into the cafeteria, the purple-haired girl was already sitting by herself at the table she always sat at. Good. If I sat there before her, she might see me and shy off elsewhere. But if I waited for her, people would notice. People notice, rumors start. That was the kind of attention I didn’t need. Not that they wouldn’t notice me going to sit with her now, but ‘weird kid sits with loner’ rumors are leagues different from ‘weird kid waited for loner girl and THEY SAT TOGETHER ARE THEY DATING?????’ rumors. They were definitely more tolerable, that’s for sure. I grabbed my tray and shuffled through the line. When my time before the lunch staff came, he slapped a rectangular slice of ‘pizza’ on to the main dish section of my tray with a pair of tongs. There were three things wrong with this situation. One: real pizza comes in isosceles triangles with one rounded edge because they start as a circle. Two: who uses tongs to serve pizza? And three: it made a sound I can only describe as a wet hand slapping Jell-o when it was applied to my tray. I tried to hide my disgust with a forced smile. The server’s face remained devoid of anything resembling emotion as he prepared another ‘pizza’ to inflict on his next victim.

‘Hey bitch, tell your fucking girlfriend she touches me one more time, I’m taking it out on your ass!’ I assumed I was the bitch, and the girlfriend was Nerissa, since she stood between us. ‘I saw you push him. You could have fucking killed him.’ ‘Scrawny bitch woulda deserved it!’ I wasn’t sure if the music had stopped or I had just tuned it out. I wasn’t even aware of anything else as I got to my feet. Not the people. No flashing lights. Just me, Nerissa, and this guy whose ears were gauged so large he could probably use them as towel racks. Or hitching posts. They were closer now. He was reaching past her, flipping me the bird. ‘Bitches don’t belong in the pit, you little shit!’ ‘Stop calling him that.’ ‘Or what? The bitch’s bitch is gonna do something?’ ‘I said stop.’ ‘What kind of bitch has his—urk!’ Before I knew it, before he knew it, her hand was on his throat. The other she drew back, fist balled. On her face was a smile. It was the kind of smile Mrs. Requiem gave me whenever I came to visit. Sweet, welcoming. Not the least bit threatening. Yet it made you feel like death waited behind it should her whimsy turn that way. ‘You had your chance to shut your fucking mouth.’

Her eyes met mine, and every nerve in my body screamed for me to flee. Fear flooded my nervous system, yet I was paralyzed. She looked no different from before, she was even still smiling! But something changed. Something I couldn’t see with my eyes but could feel on a primal level. Something left over in my brain from the primeval days of sharpened sticks and stones howled that, despite her human appearance, Mrs. Requiem was a being far more dangerous than anything I’d ever encountered.

A whistle chirped outside. Guess they got on with tryouts after all. ‘Why’d you do it?’ ‘You really wanna know?’ ‘Yeah.’ ‘Well, if I told you, I’d have to kill you.’ ‘Like you were gonna kill him?’ ‘I wasn’t—!’ She looked at me. Studied me. I think. I couldn’t tell very well because she was only in my peripheral vision and I refused to look in her direction. But I could feel her eyes on me. ‘I was only gonna hurt him a little. He deserved it.’ ‘Even if he did, those weren’t “hurt him a little” eyes.’ She laughed. A big, throw your head back and flash all your pointy teeth laugh. ‘I see why she finds you interesting, Dylan. You’re alright.’ Standing, she offered her hand. ‘Name’s Nerissa. Nerissa Requiem.’ I stood as well, but it was hard to grasp her hand from the side while staring straight ahead. So she grabbed it for me and forced me to turn to face her. I looked at her. She looked at me. Our hands were touching.

I rounded my bed and stuffed everything—condoms, phone, and wallet—into my backpack, but I was still missing the change of clothes. I grabbed some beige cargo shorts and one of the red and white palm tree print beach shirts my father sent on one of my birthdays he actually remembered and stuffed them in my pack. After one last check, I dressed in my usual white button-down and khaki pants with swim trunks underneath, went downstairs and got my bike from the garage, checked that both the garage and front doors were locked, and biked down the road, backpack bouncing from side to side as I pedaled. It wasn’t until I looked back to double-check that I shut the garage door that I remembered the bacon and toast mom left me. Oh well, I was already on the road, no turning back now. The ride from my place to Marin’s wasn’t too terrible since we both lived on the same street that ran parallel to the oceanfront, but since it was completely flat, I got no downhill breaks from pedaling. Our whole little town of Playa Clara was annoyingly flat in topography and in spirit, but I guess it didn’t matter much with Miami just north of us. Any excitement to be had was all there. Well, any excitement that wasn’t Marin.

One Saturday practice, we got a decent volley going. We hadn’t started playing games yet, but she was able to sustain a volley for more than ten shots before we lost it. It was the first time we had reached double digits, and we ran to meet at the net in our excitement. ‘Did you see that?’ ‘12!’ ‘Yeah, Marin! You’re really improving!’ I put my hand up for a high five. I got arms wrapped around me instead. ‘Oh, hey, watch the net,’ I said with a laugh. ‘Thank you,’ she whispered into my neck. ‘For what?’ I laughed again, this time colored with a bit of unease. But, since she was hugging me, I couldn’t exactly pull away or anything. Not that I wanted to. So I rubbed her back. ‘You’re doing great, Marin. You’ve got no one to thank but yourself for that.’ She pulled back enough to look me in the eye. ‘That’s not true. You taught me.’ ‘Well, maybe a little,’ I said, grinning.
