In addition to claiming that a regression to conception is the inevitable result of all prenatal states, he traced the sense of “I” — the “I-function” — back to the egg, existing even in the mother’s ovaries. He further postulated that the spiritual self was invisibly present within the field of attraction between the egg and the sperm. Correspondingly, he was the first to point out that the existence of conception, preconception, and even ovulation symbolism in dreams indicates the existence of a soul. For, he asked, what mind records these events otherwise?

We find that in doing this reversal, some startling things are revealed. To begin, from the perspective of each greater awareness, each more limited perspective becomes understandable and the different ones of those perspectives can be compared. For example, it is difficult for one individual to truly understand another. However, standing within a knowledge of psychology in general we have a better understanding of another and we can compare one individual’s reality with another and come up with meaningful and true conclusions, even comparisons and evaluations. That is, indeed, why we have the science of psychology in the first place. But at the level of cultures, a similar thing happens. Anthropologists come necessarily to the conclusion that another culture cannot truly be understood by someone standing in a different culture. APOCALYPSE – NO! 31 …constriction ... of the entire body or just the head ... and often added the element of prenatal discomfort by adding torture while so enclosed. The Iron “Maiden” is such a device. Note the feminine being employed in the name itself. Could that be any more clear that it is meant to be a painful, tortuous re-creation of being inside one’s mother? Modern movies showing such devices or procedures are indicative of these perinatal elements coming to the surface obviously. One example is “The Man in the Iron Mask.” In a similar respect, I have already mentioned our current preoccupation with water- boarding style torture. In employing suffocation, it is an effective and brutally inhuman way of stimulating people’s perinatal pain, just as straitjackets and jail cells are intended to.

In his study of historical happenings, he discovered that stages in the progression of public events of national, international scope and of historical importance — including invasions, elections, wars, programs and policies, uprisings, depressions and recessions, and much more — related to stages in the progression of gestation and birth ... which stages happened to correspond, by the way, remarkably well with Stanislav Grof’s four stages of birth, his Basic Perinatal Matrices, as we shall see. He found that natal imagery especially predominates in societies during times of crisis and war, when national purpose and state of affairs are construed as a need to escape or break free from an enclosing and constricting force. He also noted the suffering fetus and the poisonous placenta as sources of these later metaphors and imagery.

“Other Times I Can Barely See.” Freud also saw that we have at other times an opposite drive or instinct that we wish to die. That feeling causes us to want to live in the dark; to not be around people; to shy away from life and the light and being seen and recognized and even to wanting to be lonely. This self-sabotaging compulsion causes us to not care about fun, to hate and be angry, indeed to hate everyone and even to want to lash out at them for no reason other than what might be self-labeled as “spite.” This downward pull makes us want to despise goodness, calling such things “kumbaya moments”; or saying something is “schmaltzy” or “gay”; or to be saying that all that good stuff is just “drama.” This part of our disposition causes us to be jealous of others who are more giving and to hate them for that, to call people “do-gooders,” “goody two-shoes” and to impugn their motives as being they are trying to show they are better than us. Yuppies — Children of Fifties Generation Parents The values of the Yuppies are understandable, furthermore, in that they were the sons and daughters of a generation between the World-War- Two and Baby-Boomer Generations, who are rarely talked about. It is often said that the World War Two Generation — termed the G.I. Generation by Strauss and Howe and designating those born 1901 to 1924 — was followed by Boomers/Vietnam Gen, born 1943 to 1960, and that Generation X, the next generation, were the children of Boomers. Nothing could be further from the truth. The generation that followed the WWII Generation and the actual parents of Gen Xers were born 1925 to 1942 and came to adulthood during the somnolent Fifties, having most of their babies between 1961 and 1981. We might call this overlooked generation the Fifties Generation, or the Eisenhower-McCarthy Generation, or the Elvis Generation, or the Happy Days Generation ... a more cumbersome but more accurate term for them would be the War-Born Generation. They have been called the Silent Generation and the Beat Generation, and this does say something about them. The Fifties Generation have kept themselves as invisible as possible but running things from behind the screen, since they took over conservatism and greed from the WWII Generation and upped the ante. Secondary altriciality in human infants means that there is a greater need for care, for “mothering” — because of the newborn’s greater helplessness, greater dependence, greater vulnerability — than that of all other mammals postnatally. THE PRIMAL MATRIX OF MIND Page 47 …inquiry and self-awareness is required for good scholarship is evident in that the field of anthropology, even early on, asserted that researchers needed to do their own therapy, uncover their own biases, before they could hope to interpret other cultures. The idea was that one needed to take back one’s personal unconscious projections to understand another culture. Which, by the way, is a shallower version of the message of this work that one must pull back all the Veils of projected early experience so as to better approach any overstanding of any larger Reality. These early anthropologists — Ruth Benedict (1934), for example — were aware how their own cultures and personal histories influenced what they saw in others ... in their case, in other cultures. While they said self-inquiry should be done, it is not done now, if it ever really was. Lacking this self-awareness everything scientists come up with is riddled through with unconscious pain and the seemingly archetypal creations come of them. Like any other paradigm, these earliest of our experiences will direct and constrain us even in terms of where we will look to explore. They force us to interpret the data we find into constructions of assumptions which skew and often reverse the interpretations that should arise from them.
