The Flower Dama de Noche in Philippine Folktales is about a wealthy nobleman (maharlika) who lived recklessly — parties, wine, and the company of beautiful women. When he finally settled down, he married a simple village woman named Dama, who loved him and kept his home and clothes in order. But the novelty wore off. He found her plain, unrefined, and lacking in "nobility," so he returned to his old life of glitter and pleasure. Dama, terrified of losing him, wept and prayed to the spirits: "Give me a magic charm so my husband will come home and never leave my side, forever." That same night, the nobleman came home at midnight and called for Dama — but she was gone. He searched the entire house. When he returned to the bedroom, a sweet, intoxicating scent he'd never smelled before drifted in from the window. Outside, a strange bush had grown, covered in tiny white star-shaped flowers, its fragrance overwhelming. He sat by the window, whispering her name, waiting for her. She never came back. But the scent held him there, night after night, in full moonlight — Dama de Noche, blooming and luring him so he would never want to leave her side again. It's a tale of devotion turned into a kind of beautiful, inescapable trap — she can't have him as a wife, but she can have him as a prisoner of her scent."Back then, I was always proud—loyal, devoted. My world revolved around this one person, which turned out to be my biggest mistake. I lost decades of my life for love. I do regret it, but I don't regret it either, because I can see and have understood what could have happened if things hadn't turned out the way they did. But we can't dwell on the past or keep thinking about it. I am just sharing an experience, because we all have different personalities, different experiences, and different plans or goals. I cannot simply say, "It's okay, because I went through it, and it's not the end of the world." The biggest takeaway from this experience is this: whether it lasts a week, a month, or a year, love truthfully and love honestly. But don't be blind. If the person doesn't deserve you and you are doing everything you can for the relationship, walk away. Life is too short, and years pass. Love yourself and be the person you want to be. Because if you are happy and content with who you are, and you find the right person, love can be such a beautiful thing."
