As Helen pled her case to Charlie, and Kay’s addiction reached a devastating new height, Noelene realised that a fresh wardrobe would not change the way the world saw her, and Dale reflected upon whether the way he loved really did fit in anywhere.

It was hard for #HelenNorville and #KayWalters to think of much else aside from the thought of their fears being realised, whether it be an exposé on teenage institutionalisation in the paper, or one’s parents finding out where all their money had disappeared to.
In the decade of excess and extravagance, the stock market crash of 1987 shook some to their very core, and in a little media corner of Melbourne, two women were on the verge of having their fears realised.

It truly bewilders me that it was this evening five years ago (19th September 2021) that I was there to see Season One come to an end.
The season ended off on such a beautiful note of hope, and it felt impossible not knowing what came next in the story!
When two were made to reconcile, it was evident that no matter their complexities, they wanted nothing more than to be beside each other, and love each other exactly the way they were.
There was someone that could cope with the things they did after all.
You would be forgiven for not knowing there was a nuclear accident if you were in the walls of News At Six.
Simmering under the surface was implosions and explosions and revelations of firings and unfaithfulness, making News At Six a reactor of its very own.
When the news of Chernobyl reached News At Six’s desk, there was very little information available.
News At Six had to scramble to put together a bulletin with whatever they had, including a telephone call to Helen’s cousin Astrid in Ukraine.
As news of one of the worst nuclear disasters in history hit the desks of news networks, there were other implosions and explosions within the walls of News At Six, and reunions bound by love and understanding too.

This episode anniversary is dedicated to the seven souls lost in the Hoddle Street Massacre, 39 years ago 💜

In S02E02 of #TheNewsreader, people made decisions they would regret, felt the effects of post traumatic stress disorder, and they realised how important it was to stick together in times like these.
The spirit of the Melbourne community could never be extinguished ❤️
After the Hoddle Street massacre, News At Six had to contemplate a challenging notion.
What time was the ‘right time’ to have tough conversations around gun control? Does doing so make someone ‘out of touch’ with the morals of the community?
When reporting on the Hoddle Street massacre, networks had to make a decision; was it better to be first on the scene and not hide the carnage away from the audiences, or to recognise how sensitive the situation was and opt not to show the graphic footage?
Melbourne as a city was understandably shaken after the Hoddle Street massacre.
People witnessed the massacre and survived, people wondered whether their city was safe anymore, and people were trying to find hope amidst the sorrow.
When an act of violence broke the heart of Melbourne and took seven souls, in the sadness and sorrow, we discovered that everyone is only human; they are affected and deep-feeling, people just like you and me.

If there was anything to take away from this episode, it is that fair and truthful storytelling should always be the standard.
What the media says informs public opinion, and the media can cause more harm than good for marginalised communities and groups.
Helen tried to make the best of the situation by interviewing HIV-affected Russ and his lover Adam, but she made the discovery that Adam and Dale knew each other, and when their interview went pear-shaped, she wondered why Adam was apologising to Dale.
Dale; feeling bad about the outcome of the HIV story, shied away from the controversy and opted to focus on his ANZAC Day story, but soon realised that no matter how hard he tried to run away, opinions and buried truths would always follow him and come to light.
There were protestors outside the News At Six office, chanting “no more lies while gay men die.”
Their piece on a mother who had contracted HIV through a blood transfusion had contained a misquote, and the community felt betrayed by the homophobic rhetoric.
