Thick smoke sputters out from it when he turns it on.

Pulling the trigger makes the thing let out a screeching noise akin to a dying mechanimal.

The drill itself seems to have a mind of its own, choosing to start and stop when it wants, going in one direction or the other as it pleases.

It still works technically, all things considered, but a miner would have to fiddle and fidget and fight with it at every turn to get it to work properly.

“Yep,” he starts, smacking his dermas, “I think you’re slag‑outta‑luck here, buddy.”

“Aw, scrap.”

He hands the faulty drill back to Orion. Orion pokes at it apprehensively like it might explode in his face. And honestly, it might.

“You could use mine for the day, if you want.”

Orion waves him off. “Nah, I’ll be fine,” he swings the drill side‑to‑side from its handle, “Pain in the aft but it’s not the worst. Bet I can still mine more energon than you too.” Cheeky.

A blue digit turns on the drill again. Smog spews out from it violently, as if the thing has a vendetta against the mech. Orion flails and coughs. Dee frowns.

Their supervisor barks at them and the others to get a move on. Daylight’s burning.

Orion tries not to show it but he’s clearly struggling. There’d been several many near misses while they were mining, the drill like a rabid cyberdog straining against its lead and pulling its owner this way and that.

Orion smiles through it. He always smiles. Just laughs it off like it’s not a problem even after almost drilling out his own optic.

Wrangling a horde of scraplets would be easier.

The buzzer shrieks—their single ration break of the day.

Orion heads out first. Dee lingers a bit.

The break is over as soon as it came and they’re off again to another vein.

Dee swings the drill side-to-side from its handle, then aims at the ground near the ore. He adjusts it carefully and turns it on.

Thick smoke sputters out from it. Orion notices. Looks back at the drill in his servos. Looks back at him.

“…Isn’t that one mine?”

“Don’t know what you’re talking about,” he says. As most bots around him know, D‑16 really likes Megatronus Prime. He scratched a small doodle of the late Prime onto the side of his drill in a rare idling moment of leisure. The side of this one is bare. Orion’s is not. They both know this. “This one’s always been mine.”

Orion watches him for a klik before he lets out a huff and gets back to work.

And if Orion stands a little closer to him and drills away all the harder spots, neither of them mention it.

And if the next day Orion’s actual drill starts working properly again, neither of them mention it.

Orion nudges him playfully. He nudges back.
