Intramural Staircase at Carn Liath Broch #StaircaseSaturday #SaturdayStairs #DrystoneWalls #Brochs #IronAge #Sutherland #Photography

Photograph of rough-hewn stone steps, shot looking up from a low angle. The staircase is squeezed between the outer (left) and inner (right) drystone walls of a round iron age tower. The scene is dark, illuminated by an opening above, and the stones are damp and a little mossy.

Engineering as a beautiful work of art. This is the Kylesku Bridge on the west coast of Sutherland, seen in summer and in winter. The bridge replaced the Kylesku Ferry - or a 100-mile detour via Lairg - when it opened in 1984. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

The Kylesku Bridge. Both images show the Kylesku Bridge from a viewpoint above its northern end. It sweeps in from the bottom and then curves around to the right on tall narrow legs above an inlet from the sea. In the background is a rough shoreline. One of the images shows the bridge on a day with clear blue skies and green vegetation, while the other shows it after snow, with the landscape largely covered and snow lining both sides of the roadway. The sky in the snowy picture is grey. The Kylesku Bridge. Both images show the Kylesku Bridge from a viewpoint above its northern end. Good morning. Cloudy with buts of blue. Still. 13C.

I managed to capture sun up for #photooftheday this morning. I was at the beach in my jammies, but thankfully no one else was about!

Have a good day.

The beautiful beach at Achmelvich, just three miles north-west of Lochinver in Sutherland and one of Scotland's very best beaches: or more accurately a small collection of beaches nestled amongst the rocky bays and headlands here. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

Achmelvich. The image shows a view across a bay that faces left out to sea. There is grass and white sand in the foreground with rocks beyond, then an arc of pure white sand being lapped by a turquoise sea that shades to dark blue further across the bay. The far end of the bay is defined by a rocky headland. The sky is blue.

Another View of Dun Dornaigil Broch, Sutherland. #Broch #IronAge #Prehistory #Strathmore #Sutherland #Photography

Photograph of a ruined iron age broch, shot from a low angle against a backdrop of partially clouded but otherwise blue sky. The circular tower is of drystone construction, still standing up to nearly seven metres tall. An entrance passage with triangular lintel faces the camera. In the foreground there is windswept grass, and in the backround there are distant mountains.

This was across the road from Ardvreck Castle in Sutherland. Places with waterfalls, and running water have a special energy, this place being no different. The landscape holds a myriad of memories, water holds memories, deep and unrelenting.

Dun Dornaigil Broch on the Strathmore River, Sutherland. #Broch #IronAge #Prehistory #Strathmore #Sutherland #Photography

Photograph of a ruined iron age broch against a backdrop of green hills and a river. In the foreground is a tussocky slope leading down to a rough track that runs from left to right. The broch itself is a circular drystone tower, still standing almost seven metres tall in the section facing the viewer. The lower sections of wall are topped with purple heather. An entrance with a triangular lintel is visible at ground level.
