I love anything rooted in the commonplace--magical realism, I guess, the mundane laced with fantastic or sci-fi elements. And, as I've often mentioned, I love disparate personalities for character pairings. Doesn't have to be grumpy/sunshine, just mismatched. 😍

Day 30

Fantasy tropes I love: light vs. dark, enemies to lovers, ancient magic, and the price to pay.
Characters: a smart, mortally gray villain, and the reluctant hero.
Worldbuilding: pseudo-medieval setting, rare magic, unusual creatures.

Thanks @kiraofthewind.com

September Worldbuilders hosted by Kira of the Wind. Each day of the month is listed with its theme. Today is the 30th, and the theme question is: what types of characters, tropes, worldbuilding elements, etc. do you like to see in fantasy/sci-fi?

Time travel is one of my favourite tropes, but I can get picky about it.

Broadly speaking, in fantasy, I love worlds that feel properly otherworldly, with elements that are just completely unlike our world, that to the people of the world are just the norm.

@andria-kennedy.comSep 30, 2026, 11:25 AM

I'm not a trope person. 🤷‍♀️

The elements a show or movie contain don't interest me anywhere near as much as what the story is saying. I can get lost in a low-budget film with killer writers just as easily as a blockbuster with questionable dialogue.

Tell me a good story.

30: I am a huge fan of lovable rogues, heists, grimdark/crapsack worlds, and other elements of stories related to fantasy-style thieves' and assassins' guilds, especially. I will say, that while these will inevitably suck me into a story, I wouldn't necessarily call them a...

#SeptemberWorldbuilders I am a complete sucker for found families. Give me a story where a traumatized person adopts other traumatized people and I’m insane about it. (This may be why I got my start writing Teen Titans and then X-Men fanfiction… Be the change you wish to be or something 😅)

Amongs other things, some that i believe very important to worldbuilding is a healthy doze of 'Unreliable Narrator' and 'Intentional Plot Holes'. >>

I'm very into flawed protagonists. Evil with a capital E antagonists. Magic that's esoteric, hard to understand, dangerous and unstable. Severe danger at the heart of the narrative, a plague, magic so out of control it might go Chernobyl, monsters that...

Been watching the topically dystopian anime, Psycho Pass. I also just marathoned Kane Pixels's entire YouTube channel after watching Backrooms, and I absolutely love it. Reminds me a lot of the nonsensical geometry I write about for the realm, Esraidambôl.

#SeptemberWorldbuilders D30:
ACTUAL HEROES!
I'm tired of heroes that are broken, down trodden, barely likeable, massively flawed, outright criminals, ect.
I want to see more heroes being heroic. Some flaws are fine, but not a laundry list, or ones that make them nearly as bad as the badies.

Last day of #SeptemberWorldbuilders! Join me next month for more worldbuilding questions!
What kind of character archetypes, tropes, or worldbuilding elements do you like to see in fantasy/sci fi media? What things, when you see them, immediately make you more interested in the story?

The background image shows a pink moon on the horizon of a sandy beach. There's a single mountain in the background. The image gives off vibes of peace and serenity and a little bit of magic

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, because my WIP is basically a heist story
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, because my WIP is also set in a world of morally dubious, conspiratorial authorities
The Dresden Files, because The Dresden Files

Rather appropriately, I've been getting my worldbuilding in as part of prepping for D&D sessions. I've recently taken over DMing for a youth group, which means I now spend my Saturday mornings with rascaly kids who love to test the limits of what I'll let them get away with.

Reading: I'm rereading Pale, by Wildbow. It's my favorite work of fiction ever.

Watching: I'm watching Sailor Moon with my wife for the first time. Kinda enjoying it but I'm only 2 episodes in.

Playing: Final Fantasy VIII. Loved it.
