The gannets at @rspbbemptoncliffs.bsky.social were doing a bit of synchronised flying. i suspect I might have done a bit of post-processing as the North Sea isn’t normally that colour!

Fulmar - the highest recorded species in SMP for 2024, 2025, and 2026 (so far).
Young Fulmar don't return to breeding sites until they are four or five, and even then, don't breed until they're nine! #Seabirds @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social

An image of a Fulmar with an accompanying fact file covering their wingspan (100-112cm), life expectancy for a bird reaching breeding age (44), diet (mainly fish but also crustaceans and squid), lays 1 egg, can be seen year round (though most frequently during the breeding season), and 350,000 breeding pairs.

Pelagic Mandala Birds

Beyond-offing
Bounty without source,
We swirl and eddy before you as the
World’s hidden orbit -
Coating drear crag and salt crust in
Fecund demand and fornication.

Wintering in grey silence,
We listless-pick at plankton and
Shoal-speck like mendicant friars.

Then
Deep-brain, pineal-eye
Skull-blister cracks open
Light into song-centre and florid
Hormonal wardrobe -

Plumping shrunken selves into
Buxom summer vigour;
Steeping leg and beak in
Mandala saffron of
Life-death turning.

We are the Great Wheel:
Thousandfold ember-flow,
Counterflow -
Whirl upon whirl,
Whirl within whirl -
Eight-figured eternity
Held momentarily as it
Melts into air.

White-vented #Storm-Petrel (regrettably a.k.a “Elliot’s) has endemic subspecies on Galápagos, but no nest has ever been found hence Data Deficient. They are fun to watch feeding & common #birds #seabirds

I will use the IUCN name White-vented Storm-Petrel (because regrettably other taxonomies use an eponym “Elliot’s”) for this beautiful Oceanitidae southern Storm-petrel family) species. This is an endemic subspecies, though to nest exclusively on the Galápagos Islands, though no nest has ever been found there & they are considered “Data Deficient” for this reason. They are so much fun to watch feeding at the surface and common around the islands.
