#ScribesAndMakers Oct 6: "On a scale of 0-100, how much conflict (however you personally define it) is necessary for a compelling story?"

Personally? None. "Compelling" can take many forms beyond conflict. Curiosity and hope are two that drive me as a reader.

On a scale of 0-100, how much conflict (however you personally define it) is necessary for a compelling story?

Necessary? 1.

There has to be at least one thing that needs to be resolved. A story can contain many other things that are compelling: interesting and fun […]

#ScribesAndMakers 10/5. Excluding unfinished work, what's the longest it has taken you to complete a project?

My doctorate took 13 years. If you are talking about actual writing projects - s-team origins took around 7 years.

Of course, both were being done part time. Things sped up when I went […]

#ScribesAndMakers <5 Excluding unfinished work, what's the longest it has taken you to complete a project?

Oh that's so hard! I don't usually keep track of time. If I have a deadline, then I do.

I'm going to try to keep track of time for the next pebble mosaic project I do. I have the goal of […]

#ScribesAndMakers 10/5. Excluding unfinished work, what's the longest it has taken you to complete a project?

Years. I can't be more exact because the oldest project of mine began in the early 1990s and ended a few years ago, and at the time I didn't really react. I was numb. Stunned that I'd […]

#ScribesAndMakers Oct 4: "Do you include details in your work that are important to you even though no one else will likely notice?"

Oh yes. Particularity with settings I'm familiar with.
But readers will always surprise you.
They'll know.

#ScribesAndMakers <4 Do you include details in your work that are important to you even though no one else will likely notice? Yes, probably, although I can't think of an example because it's early and I'm on my first cup of tea. As other people have said, if someone notices a particular hidden […]

Do you include details in your work that are important to you even though no one else will likely notice?

Of course. You know a reader isn't going to get 100% of what's there to find. Hardly anyone is close-reading, cross-referencing and analysing books for fun. And even […]

#ScribesAndMakers Oct. 3: Is there a common thread throughout your creative work

People broken in various ways, stumbling through it all, relationships carrying the day

My fav scenes to write are moments of quiet intimacy, not in the romance/sex sense, just people interacting with care and […]

#ScribesAndMakers <3 Is there a common thread throughout your creative work (apart from the fact that you created it)?

I prefer to take photos of things that are crumbling and fleeting. I find beauty in things that are burnt, dying, or just really old and gnarly. I'm not sure if people can see […]

#ScribesAndMakers 3. Is there a common thread throughout your creative work (apart from the fact that you created it)?

Saying something of deep import, but with humour. So the important points get through.

#ScribesAndMakers 3. Is there a common thread throughout your creative work (apart from the fact that you created it)?

I don't know, really. Maybe not. Or, if there is, I can't see it right now.

I paint (mostly cats). I play music (mostly piano). I write stories (satire, fantasy, science […]

Do you think it's important for authors to use different pen names for different genres?

That's more a marketing question than a writing question. I don't personally do it, since apart from anything else, my short stories are all over a Venn diagram of a few genres, and […]

#ScribesAndMakers <2 Do you think it's important for authors to use different pen names for different genres?
It’s not important for me as a reader but it’s easier for me to know that Mira Grant books are horror by Seanan McGuire and that I stay away from them.

#ScribesAndMakers Oct 2: Do you think it's important for authors to use different pen names for different genres?

It is important for the Amazon algorithm, which will be important for as long as most people buy their books on Amazon.

Also, a writer writing both erotica and kidlit should […]

#ScribesAndMakers 2Oct—Do you think it's important for authors to use different pen names for different genres?

This is something I'm actively struggling with. I don't particularly want to, but I can see a situation where it may be useful.

#ScribesAndMakers October 2: "Do you think it's important for authors to use different pen names for different genres?"

I think of Iain Menzies Banks, who wrote mainstream fiction as Iain Banks and science fiction as Iain M. Banks. I always thought it was an elegant way to separate.

#ScribesAndMakers <1 Draw a fish and share it. (It doesn't have to be brilliant.)

An outline of a goldfish on lined paper with the word “FISH” beneath it. There’s a pen at the top of the page.
@eveventually.bsky.socialOct 1, 2026, 4:29 PM

Today's #ScribesAndMakers prompt was to draw a fish. I ended up drawing two.

#PixelArt #Fish

A pixel art angel fish with dark vertical stripes. Its main body is almost round but, with its fins, it is almost arrowhead shaped. An angel fish pixel art in an orange and red palette. The fish's body is oval but its top and bottom fins make it almost a wide arrowhead shape. It faces toward the right.
