Last week’s Open Books Open Minds author panel had middle grade authors say why they write for this age group⤵️
Jamie Sumner said,
“I want my readers to consider: What’s your defense mechanism? What do your friends bring out in you? What do you bring out in your friends?”
Texas librarians say ongoing efforts to restrict books are creating uncertainty in schools and making it harder to connect students with the stories they love.

When authors gift their books to school libraries it goes a long way⤵️
Thanks to H.D. Carver for sending 2 more copies of 📚 We Became Wild, her young adult novel focused on teen bonds, survival and trauma 💔for my district’s other 2 high school libraries!
I love my job!
I get to spend this rainy Sunday developing an author visit that includes real life fossils gifted to me by a fossil hunter in Kansas.

Batch baking some shrinky dink dots on a rainy afternoon. They are turning out so cute! 🥰
A little note goes a long way. My principal at the building I share left this for my colleague and I.
2nd grade made buddy dots for #DotDay ! We colored a dot, cut half to keep, then gathered two quarters from classmates’ dots to make a whole new creation.
ALWAYS grateful for the sharing of @wendygarland.bsky.social ! Thanks to her our 4th grade Ss were thrilled with our new dot punches and made some very creative #DotDay bookmarks.
A 5th grader on a scavenger hunt of books by call numbers referred to graphic novels as “the holy grail of the library.” Circ stats confirm this. 🤣
This year’s 5th graders are learning more about Louis Braille’s system of dots for #DotDay!
My students love the Make + Take Your Own Bookmark station in the school library⤵️
🎨Free paint swatches

Now that students can take up to 5 books home, we are practicing being respectful and making selections that include “2 of a kind” so there are some for others.
#DotDay fun:
Kindergarten Ss are working their fine motor skills by drawing dots in the first letter of their name, then adding dot stickers.
1st graders are designing a shrinky dink dot -tiny versions coming soon!
Inspired by @illinimccoy.bsky.social I created a video to explain how Open Library works. They are riveted. The live version of "me" is just not as enticing.
