With Fors Clavigera, he bypassed conventional bookselling, rejected trade discounts and fixed the selling price. The book itself became an experiment in value, labour & fair exchange.

In 1864, Ruskin delivered "Of Kings' Treasuries" at Rusholme Public Hall and Library in aid of the Rusholme Institute and Birch School Library. It became one of Victorian Britain's most influential defences of public libraries and access to wider culture.
