…which one rationalizes the results as being worthwhile. One’s life is a ritual; it is unlived and unfelt, and one weighs the resulting despair against an imagined life, where all dreams come true ... much like fairy tales console children and religion tranquilizes adults.

Finally, the fact that this is all a consequence of the fear of perinatal elements is reflected in the infant/baby faces pulling the caged matriarchal symbol.

Another provocative aspect of this image, in the film, has to do with the fact of these hordes of infant-like city dwellers, who are depicted as impoverished and oppressed, and so enslaved. This indicates how these are suffering masses ... and that these bent- backed and huddled, laboring people are really just needy babies inside, driven by leftovers from their perinatal pasts. And again, the hero, in keeping with the Perseus way, is not on the ground with them (as in experiential therapy, the individual would actually be allowing the pains of birth to arise); he is not participating in their struggle (as the Tao of Funny God would have its hero doing); indeed, their suffering feeds his fake and artificial flight, just as the suffering masses and their incessant labors feed the displays, vanities, and artifices of the wealthy of any society — those who are not engaged in the actual struggle of humanity, but who, from their Olympian peaks, seek to manipulate and manage it at a distance and without “getting their hands dirty.”

…confronted, let alone “killed,” because it is affecting one second- handedly, the first and sometimes only response that one can make that is transcendent and is counter to the negative cycle of violence is to simply not participate. If one cannot be part of the solution, one can at least step outside of the arena where one is part of the problem. In showing such a running away from evil as being transcendent, creative, and even Divine, Robbins does in his novel what is being done, in a “right-handed” way, by the movie, Joe Versus the Volcano. For it is all about flipping the script from the one we know, whose ending is clearly evil. We at least have a chance that way.

The anima “damsel” here in the film, tellingly, is trapped in a barred cage which floats in the air, much like women in a patriarchy are put on a pedestal while at the same time being held in bondage. And this prison cell has strings or ropes dangling from it by which the creatures on the ground pull it through the streets of the metropolis. Pulling artificial dreams and distorted images of the feminine and of spirituality, the peons of modern civilization — enslaved by their brutal birth traumas within and crushing economic oppression without — move their bedraggled forms forward through the anonymous and unwelcoming maze of the polluted urban landscape.

Thus, with matriarchy in a cage, with the anima and the feeling self enslaved in the patriarchy, the only response for the hero, like the Pegasus erupting out of the stump of the Medusa, is to engage in an imagined life. In this substitute patriarchal fantasy, the hero does, actually, at a point later on in the movie, have a confrontation and fight to the death with a “dragon” — in this case, a giant, metallic, heavily armored Asian warrior figure. Sure enough the result is futile, showing an actual inability to do anything about the enslaved self and its feelings. So, the hero is not free, cannot free anyone else, is not able to do anything but engage in pyrrhic victories and struggles in…

Yet how cowardly, on the other hand, was it to conform to the draft and do what one was told in helping to precipitate the war and contribute to the slaughter of millions and the ecocide of huge swaths of land? When the engines of society are rolling over human lives, is it more cowardly to refuse to be a part of it, often suffering severe consequences of jail time, approbation, and worse? Is it more cowardly to lay one’s body on the gears of the infernal machine, as Mario Savio saw it?2 Or is it actually more cowardly to refuse to stand up for life, become an obedient soldier, and go along with the patriarchy, receiving all kinds of applause and reward for obeying it in the process and for the rest of one’s life?

At any rate, Tom Robbins, in his novel, opens the door to a new way of understanding heroism and cowardice — one which, as well, is most relevant to our current multicultural times. He shows that a true heroic approach is one that dares to do what no one has ever done: change the prevailing pattern, buck tradition, create a new cultural form — one more in line with reason, life, peace, love, and freedom from unnecessary suffering and brutality. In that, he may have been inspired by the Yippies and Abbie Hoffman during the Vietnam War. Robbins shows the “left hand” of the Tao of Funny God, if you will. That is, that it is certainly transcendent and powerful to confront evil and to not be caught up in it and to exemplify a loving, creative, and peaceful response.

But in the case of a war, when it comes to an evil (such as societal pressure to become a soldier and to kill) that cannot be…

…pattern of a man’s life, men seek to unite with their feminine sides, their animas, externally and unsuccessfully, through marriage. This caged angelic figure in the film, Brazil, is a perfect representation of the imprisoned feelings, pleasures, joie de vivre, emotions, spirituality, compassion, sexuality, nurturing qualities, relationship yearnings, and more, which is the anima for a man.

It is significant that this anima in Brazil, caged as it is, contrasts with the anima in Joe Versus the Volcano, who is not only free, but in her final “incarnation” as Patricia is quite outspoken as well, indicating her wholeness of personality, more specifically, the fact that she has integrated her animus, that is to say, her masculine side. These differences in the anima characters of the two films say a lot in revealing their contrasting messages.

The anima is related to a man’s mother, in that its characteristics are fashioned through a boy’s relationship to his mother in early life. As I will explain in a little bit, the anima is also related to and expressive of the Divine Feminine — the Goddess or the matriarchy.

The anima “damsel” here in the film, tellingly, is trapped in a barred cage which floats in the air, much like women in a patriarchy are put on a pedestal while at the same time being held in bondage.

…confused about morality and mores and directionless ... unhappy.

Whereas, I contend it is good thing. This accessibility of cultural ideas, other than those that one was born into, has profound implications for a postmodern multicultural world — one whose mixing of cultural ideas is increased exponentially through the catalyst of the internet. I believe those implications are hopeful and wonderful and that they set the stage for a better way and an alternative path for a humanity currently heading for an abyss.

Indeed, in Robbins’s novel, the ruler, Alobar, does something revolutionary: He runs away; effectively saying “to hell with this bullshit!” This can be seen as parallel to the draft “dodgers” during the Vietnam War in America. They were roundly criticized for being cowardly; and certainly there was self-interest involved in what they did. Yet how cowardly, on the other hand, was it to conform to the draft and do what one was told in helping to precipitate the war and contribute to the slaughter of millions and the ecocide of huge swaths of land? When the engines of society are rolling over human lives, is it more cowardly to refuse to be a part of it,…

Risking It All in Running Away

The novel, Jitterbug Perfume, by Tom Robbins, contains an excellent exploration and understanding of this new approach — the necessity, first and foremost, that one not be part of the evil, in a situation where wrongness blankets everything. The story depicts the hero, Alobar, refusing to go along with the cultural mandates of his society, seen clearly as ridiculous and harmful, especially to him. This is wrongness, all pervasive, for the cultural mindset contains not a shred of an alternative. He, indeed, is a king who, according to tradition, is supposed to kill himself at a certain time. No king has ever before refused this regicide. No one in that culture has ever really considered one could.

This situation is not unlike many cultures today and is certainly the mindset of those living in the societies of earlier times. Anthropologists readily observe that the lesser the contact any society and culture has with other ones, the lesser those people living within it know of alternatives to the tenets of their own culture. And the lesser people know of alternatives to anything, including the cultural views of one’s society, the less they are able to conceive options in the decisions of one’s life. This is often seen as a bad thing by scholars in the social sciences, as people in such a situation are said to be losing their cultural or national identity and are depicted as…

…campaigns (slaying dragons) pales in importance in the face of the reality of an all-pervasive environmental collapse, worldwide nuclear radiation, and extinction of species at a rate that will lose half of all within our lifetimes ... with a good chance that humans will be part of that or follow soon after (the volcano).

In such situations, the battlefield inside oneself must be walked away from. It does little good if one makes good therapeutic progress in self-esteem when the fate of all life is in the balance. What does it matter if one is fearful or anxious ... why put effort into changing it ... when we are in a situation and in a society where that is warranted ... and even saner than being unmoved and complacent about it? Similarly, while confronting the evils of the world one must make an inner surrender of the competition on that worldly level in hopes of raising the entire conflict to another dimension on the inner plane.

The novel, Jitterbug Perfume, by Tom Robbins, contains an excellent exploration and understanding of this new approach — the necessity, first and foremost, that one not be part of the evil, in a situation where wrongness blankets everything.

You Just Can’t Slay a Volcano

But what may seem to work at the second-line or psychodynamic level — the conquering or slaying of negative feelings ... and notice that I said “seem” — has no place at all at the perinatal ... or, in the case of the world, at the actual. For here, in terms of one’s feelings, the pain energy is overwhelming and pervasive, more than can be dealt with analytically or using one’s intelligence and reason. Similarly, in the outer world, the reality of the situation is too overwhelming and pervasive to be dealt with by piecemeal or “boy scout” approaches. It is also too intense and emotion churning to be dealt with as if it is just another problem to be solved that is on one’s todo list.

Thus the difference between engagement at the psychodynamic versus the perinatal is analogous to that between facing the energy of a dragon and facing that of a volcano. In the outer world, similarly, the evil, like a volcano, is seen to be all-pervasive and intractable. It does not suffice voting out a low-level authority or removing a corrupt official or police officer acting as a tyrant, when the structures of societies throughout the world embody a model of humanity containing a hierarchy with each level below subservient to the one above and the ones at the very top needing to keep everyone below enslaved lest they are ousted from their position at the apex. In such a situation evil cannot be vanquished, if it ever could. Similarly,..

This indicates that when one does not really deal with evil or unconscious materials and merely whacks away at its most visible (and indirect and symbolic) elements, if it, like the Hydra, does not sprout another head, then it is substituted for with an illusory and fantasy creation. This is a lot like the “positive” thinking one hears so many people espousing. They do not seem to know that in going to war with all their “negative” thoughts they are creating a fantasy world to live in, one that is built up of all the Pegasuses of thought that are born from going after only the most obvious aspects of darkness and evil as represented by thoughts (not feelings).

The movie, Brazil, shows us other intriguing elements. The “hero” in these dreams is shown with wings of metal. Tellingly, while he flies like a bird, his garb is also metallic; he is protected completely by armor. Armor expresses the defensive quality of this “hero’s” quest. It is a substitute quest, divorced from reality, and keeping him from dealing with the real evils in his life and society and with the real shortcomings of his life and in his character and spiritual development.

It is a rather good depiction of the Jungian approach I detailed above, where one, as if in some kind of Plato’s cave of reflected realities, struggles and contends with the reflected images of reality. And in doing so, one is doomed to failure. There is, in actuality, no carrying over of hocus pocus into any real world. Perpetual ritual act…

…world, to leave the world a better place — are most often embodied in easier to do and indirect modes of participation, with no real commitment on one’s part. Rather than stand up for injustice, one gives money to the starving in Africa. Rather than put oneself on the line for the planet as the Greenpeace, Earth First, and environmental activists do, one might sponsor a middle schooler in an Earth Day 3k, driving one’s car to get her there. One can support litter pickup and recycling or expound on the social media about the stupidity of others in not saving the planet, while gathering up one’s throwaways in polyethylene bags. One can claim to be making the world a safer place, while slaughtering innocents in far off lands under the direction of wealthy overseers.
