Mean tells you how green an area is on average. Change one word to standard deviation and the same block tells you how mixed it is.
Loading aerial imagery in Earth Engine: filter by place first, then by date, then mosaic.
One word. Change mean to stdDev in a seventy line script and Earth Engine tells you something completely different about the same patch of ground.
Most consumer drones carry an RGB camera only. No infrared band, so a true NDVI is impossible from these photographs.
The plan leaves the laptop. Drone on the ground, controller on, a quick check that the GPS has locked, and it lifts off.
Setting up a mapping flight comes down to a few numbers. Sixty metres above ground. Eighty percent front overlap, seventy to the side.
Sixty metres up, eighty percent overlap, one battery. Every one of those numbers is decided at a desk, before the drone leaves its case.
Goodbye, tree-measuring poles. Hello, drone-mounted multispectral cameras. How #UBC researchers @irssubc.bsky.social are using #CFIFunded #RemoteSensing tech to track forest health in incredible detail. 🌲🌳bit.ly/4xrgEfz
I'm reorganising my accounts. The new @eomp.info will be the main #business account for the future and related to general #earthobservation and #remotesensing developments.
@eomasters.org will keep posting about EOMasters things. So chose which you would like to follow. Ideally both 😊
Waves, not just tides or salt, decide where mangroves can stand. New global model uses 20 years of wave data to predict coastal forests. #Mangroves #ClimateScience #CoastalEcology #RemoteSensing

The #remoteSensing community seems to have left Bluesky, I'm afraid.
The future of Canada’s $87B #forestry industry depends on planting the right trees for a changing #climate. #CFIFunded #RemoteSensing tech @irssubc.bsky.social is providing insights. 🌲🌳bit.ly/4xrgEfz
Using #GlobalEcosystemDynamicsInvestigation data, the study for the first time provided a national-scale assessment of the difference in 3D structure between natural forests and tree plantations in China.
#Sentinel-2 and a game of shadows. 100+ icebergs in northern Baffin Bay, many grounded. Long autumn shadows give rough height estimates of up to ~40 m, many 10-15 m. Young ice is forming around them and will likely become fast ice for the season.
