I am nearly sure it is still live and not "as-live" as in that cliffhanger we don't get a single cam on whatever's stuck onto Dillon's face.

Ok every idea, image and twist is stolen hook, line and sinker by Pertwee #DoctorWho Season 7. The reason I cannot get behind Season 7 being that great Who season is that It is stolen Quatermass.

I was even saying "dem Thunderballs" aloud for this ep's Sam Seeely.

Quatermass taking the case right now is a bit easy. The guy has enough problems surely?
But once we get out into the country the production can breathe and show its skills.
Feels very #TalesOfTomorrow sci-fi horror which itself was mainly "The Dunwich Horror" inspired.

The first 10 minutes is all rocket fare and why Quatermass isn't arrested by Australia I don't know. However it's irrelevant to the plot unless it comes back later. I suspect Kneale hasn't wasted 10 minutes of screen time just to show off his big dick energy.

We have a new Bernard Quatermass in John Robinson. He's decent and isn't a sterile roundhead like Brian Donlevy so there's that.
He has a daughter now, Paula, played by Monica Grey. She seems a straight replacement for Judith Carron at first?

The one poor sci-fi aspect of "The Quatermass Experiment" was nuclear powered being used in spacecraft and boy Kneale doubles down!

The end shows how soulless this film is. It deleted the idea all 3 men were amalgamated. So the monster just gets fried. There's no plea to its humanity therefore no sci-fi, it's just mere horror.

This Bernard Quatermass fingers a V sign to intellectual exploration.

The one thing I wanted to see during the TV series but couldn't was the Quatermass/Lomas by play. We get it here but Lomax (Jack Warner) is far more watchable than Donlevy.

Donlevy's long tough guy walk at the end was great. Did he learn his lesson? Did he f-n buffalo!

The night shooting adds lots, there's a lot of location work adds scale and isn't just stock footage.
The Zoo sequence is succesful, the lab sequence isn't bad.
The BBC finally showing up in Westminster Abbye is great. The meta fare is a bit watered down alas.

Brian Donlevy gives nothing to add to the horror as he has ine gear and won't leave it no matter what.
But Richard Wordswirht, Jack Warner, David King-Wood all improve the drama. King-Wood's Dr Briscoe nearly selsl the sci-fi horror on this own as Donlevy cannot join in.

The second half is a lot better than the first half.
Victor's escape is decent. The wife plotting the kidnap in this version just to get away from Quatermass is a fun twist.
The little boy is now girl and it's Jane Asher 71 years ago!
A drunk old gal too, all good!

The first TV ep is basically done in the first 5 minutes. Though you lost the global scale the crash site on film is impressive.

Ultimately this has zero of the punch, charisma, meta media glory and sauce of the OG. Yet despite the witless lead performer this is fine.

Despite the drone Yank Quatermass this is decent. Very good for a 1955 UK sci-fi film.

The film captures the scale of the OG well albeit it splashes down & drowns as a mid Atlantic culturally valueless end product (eg: the radio channel is not the BBC but Generic FM).

For the first time in its history but not its last a British sci-fi giant sells out only to be dumped on by Yanks.
Brian Dunlevy is an US Quatermass and boy is he a functional clinical roundhead.
And Caroon's wife is dubbed because? She never even got a single close up.
