I usually practice on the back of whatever pumpkin I'm carving before trying new things. Each pumpkin reacts differently based on water content, pumpkin type, etc.

The lightning and the cloud depth texture are things I need to practice for this carve. Here's some lightning tests.

My favorite tool is a 90 degree V wedge from Warren Cutlery. I also love their wooden and rubber handles. I use my standard V wedge for outlining with that rubber handle to save finger wear.

Outlining of the Mindflayer and man are done. Its a bit harder a surface than I thought but should turn out well.
