#BirdOfTheDay theme is #Pairs w/ alternate theme of Green, having green in the background. I hit both with this pair of long-billed dowitchers I found in an algae covered retention pond in front of a housing development in Denton, TX.

Two odd looking shorebirds wading in shallow water covered with splotches of thick, gooey looking algae. They are long-billed dowitchers and Merlin describes them as, "Plump, medium-sized shorebirds with very long bills." They have really intricately colored plumage on their backs and wings that I find really difficult to describe. I'm gonna say the pattern looks almost like asymmetrical fish scales that are mostly almost black but with a thin white border around the ends. The breast and shoulders look a little salmon colored around the shoulders and sides and turning much lighter towards the breast. The bill fairly thick but not enough to make you think "thick" over "slender" and is about 2/3 the length of the rest of the birds body.

Red-breasted mergansers obliging me by modeling for an extended photo shoot in a retention pond near Chicago.

Male and female red-breasted merganser following each other around in a retention pond. They're both facing to the left and their images are reflecting super clearly in the almost still water.

Mr and Mrs Red-breasted merganser striking an artsy pose where they're facing opposite directions and the male is passing just in front of the female.

In this one, they form a more or less t shape with the male behind and facing the camera (more or less) while the female is passing across his front from right to left.
