How did the first people to migrate to islands adapt to the new environments?

Isotope analysis at #Neolithic Haitan Island on the south-east China coast reveals how early humans adapted their diets to maritime environments remarkably quickly.

I love the sight of a passage tomb in the morning. #megalith #neolithic

Late Neolithic passage tomb near Plouhinec, in the Finistère Department of Brittany in France. It consists of a corridor made of flat stones that are very roughly 1.5 meters tall and wide. The stones are upright on their edges and placed in two parallel rows to form the walls of the passage. The stones are not uniform size. They are capped by another series of flat stones, so the structure is like a square-shaped tube. One end of the tomb is blocked with yet another flat stones, and the other end is open. Human remains and flints were found in the chamber formed by blocking the end of the passage. Photo mine.

Stone and bone tools from c. 5375 cal BC Eilsleben, Germany.
Whilst the stone axes clearly reflect #Neolithic traditions, the flint and bone tools point to contact with local #Mesolithic foragers on Europe's Neolithic frontier.

An inside view of Hagar Qim, a temple on Malta, looking out to the island of Filfla. On either side you can see niches which have been braced.

#StoneWorkSunday #Neolithic

The inside of Hagar Qim, looking south the temple seems to have been constructed with this view on Filfla in mind. Of course, much of it has since gone missing like the roof and the temple we see was the result of multiple phases of construction.

So whether this was done on purpose, and for what purpose if so, I don't know.

Göbeklitepe’s first intact graves suggest many of the 928 human bone fragments scattered through its pillared buildings began in burials under house floors, then slid downhill. #Archaeology #Neolithic #Göbeklitepe www.anthropology.net/p/gobeklitep...

A revisit to Long Meg and her Daughters for #StandingStoneSunday

So much going on at this site with the setting, the geology, the carvings and the earlier monuments - just a fascinating glimpse at the Neolithic.

A squat, white standing stone in a field. The stone is speckled with green lichen and is made of rhyolite and is a glacial erratic.A tall block of red sandstone, known as 'Long Meg', in a field. Another view of the tall red sandstone block of Long Meg, from this angle the stone appears tapered and long-necked. Other stones can be seen across the grassy field towarslds some deciduous trees.

Human bone has been coming out of Göbeklitepe in scattered pieces since 1995, 928 fragments across three thousand square metres. The first two intact burials have now been excavated, and they suggest the scatter was made by landslides rather than ritual.
