It's publication day for A Scrap of Moss & Magick! Officially out in the world, with @dfbstoryhouse.bsky.social. It feels at once wildly thrilling & strangely distant.

(Alt Text for extended thanks! Links in bio!)

Good luck, little book, out in the world! Go well!

A picture of my book, A Scrap of Moss and Magick, on a beautiful purple background. There is text around it: Out Now. From dazzling debut author Helen Parry. Illustrations by Melissa Castrillón.

Many, many thanks to everyone who has worked on this with me: the extraordinary David Fickling Books who are so committed & passionate about children's books (& especially editor extraordinaire Rosie & marketing genius Fern), to Liz Scott who's worked so hard & cleverly promoting it, & to Melissa Castrillón whose art inside & outside the book is so beautiful & perfect.

And thank you to everyone who has supported it: Philippa Leathley, Gita Ralleigh, Helena Duggan with their kind comments; Jacqui Sydney, Sally Farr & Leonni Lark for their lovely early reviews. On a purple background with beautiful leafy fronds by Melissa Castrillón, a quote@ 'An instant classic. All the warmth of a hot chocolate with delicious darkness sprinkled on top. A must read for fans of Diana Wynne Jones.' Philippa Leathley, author of The Inkbound Series.

Hello #kidlitartpostcard day!

Spooky season inspires monsters and, in this case, scary makeovers?

I'm a Canadian illustrator, I love drawing for #kidlit and #middlegrade and am open to new projects!

Spooky season chapter headings, anyone? It’s official… I’ve now got a middle grade section up on my website. I’ll be continuing to add pieces as I finish them, but I’m very excited to have this up and running!

RUNAWAY HOME Coming April 2027 It's 1994. A twelve-year-old runs away.

But what she's really looking for isn't a place to hide. It's somewhere to land.

Themes give a story its weight — the reason it stays with a reader after the plot fades.
Motifs give a story its texture and unity — they're how a theme gets felt rather than stated.
Both are important because they add richness and meaning to a story. #middlegrade #kidlit #creativewriting #craft

The image discusses book bans of children’s literature and features Alder Van Otterloo’s middle grade book THE BEAUTIFUL SOMETHING ELSE, a children’s book about a nonbinary child discovering their own identity while adjusting to life in kinship care. Against a background of book edges, the title reads: “Book bans.” Below that, a quote reads: "Families are allowed to say ‘no thanks’ to certain books. However, it’s not fine to attempt to dictate what others are allowed to be, express, and have available to read. ~Alder Van Otterloo" To the center right is the cover of Alder’s book, THE BEAUTIFUL SOMETHING ELSE. To the left of the book cover is a book review quote that read: “Libraries and schools will want to fight to keep this beautiful book in their collections. ~The Bulletin,” At the bottom is “Exclusive Interview” with an arrow pointing to: https://www.sarahsteinbacher.com/blog/interview-alder-van-otterloo
