#Microplastics affect plant growth & function. Higher concentrations of microplastics reduced leaf area/chlorophyll content photosynthetic efficiency/plant biomass in lettuce. The smaller the size of microplastics, the more they absorb pollutants/pesticides/toxins.

Fields that had worn tire particles had the highest levels of toxic chemicals & metals. #Microplastics interact with soil bacteria.

#Microplastics were found in 227 agricultural fields across 11 European countries. They are delivering pollutants & pesticides through the soil to any crop grown & later ingested by people.

Aged microplastics are not just passive particles in wastewater. They can boost reactive species and accelerate carbamazepine degradation by 1.2–1.8× in UV-AOPs. The study also shows that faster degradation may form more toxic intermediates.
