TEDDY SANDOVAL, a queer Chicano artist in the late 1900s, challenged ideas of masculinity, sexuality in the Chicano community. His work was transgressive and existed out of institutional acceptance, instead he created his own institutions & community. #LatinxHeritageMonth #LatinxContemporaryArtist

Teddy Sandoval and his friend & collaborator Joey Terrill had these shirts printed with “maricon” - a slur for gay men in Spanish, in order to directly challenge machismo in the Chicano community & to reclaim the slur as a word denoting pride and humor.
