(🧡 1/4) On the cover of our #LatestIssue: The holoparasitic plant Cuscuta reflexa infecting its host Coleus blumei. Cuscuta spp. are obligate heterotrophs that lack both roots and leaves.

On the cover of New Phytologist volume 252, issue 2: The holoparasitic plant Cuscuta reflexa infecting its host Coleus blumei. Cuscuta spp. are obligate heterotrophs that lack both roots and leaves. Their limited photosynthetic capacity is insufficient to sustain growth and development, making them entirely dependent on host plants for survival. The parasites twine around host shoots and form specialized multicellular feeding organs, known as haustoria, which penetrate the host tissues to establish vascular connections and extract water and nutrients.
