Text: Why I Write the Stories I Do I think, underneath the fantasy, my books are about people becoming who they are. I write about ordinary people carrying more than they expected, trying to find their place in the world without losing themselves to it. I'm drawn to the way other people shape us, how love, friendship, family, loss and responsibility leave pieces behind, and how sometimes the things that hurt us become part of what makes us who we are. I like power to have a cost, monsters to have once been human, and the truth to be more complicated than people were taught. My characters often want freedom, the open road and the chance to choose their own lives, but they usually discover that meaning comes from the people they choose to care about and the responsibilities they're willing to carry. I suppose, more than anything, I write about connection, identity and impermanence: the fact that nothing lasts forever, but that doesn't make it meaningless. It might be exactly what makes it matter.
