โI'll stop at the next chapterโ is a terrible plan with a horror book.
That's the chapter where somebody finds the basement door open.
Which book last talked you into staying up?
LAST DAY TO PRE-ORDER. For readers who like their scares rural, cursed, and mean: black firs, dead signals, strange animals, and kids who find what should stay lost.
An unlikeable horror protagonist works for me. A boring one doesn't.
I don't have to approve of their choices. I just have to believe they'd make them.
Do you need to like the main character, or only understand them?
A restaurant-rescue host finally finds some perfect food.
A producer tells him to "stage" some problems anyways.
Then the restaurant really gives him something to complain about.

Horror doesn't need blood on page one. It needs one ordinary detail that feels wrong.
Give me unease before explanation every time.
Do you want the danger visible immediately, or hiding in the background?
Which one-star horror review sells you the book?
"Too disturbing"
"Nothing but violence"
"The ending made me angry"
"I couldn't sleep afterward"
I'm taking "I couldn't sleep afterward." That's a recommendation.
Pick the setting that becomes dangerous fastest in a horror book:
A basement with one light
A restaurant after closing
The woods behind your house
An empty road after midnight
The restaurant gets my vote. Too many doors you can't see through.

Indie horror readers: what gets an unfamiliar author onto your TBR?
The cover, the premise, a sample, or another reader refusing to shut up about it?
Lock the doors and cut off every exit. I'm already interested.
A single room, a house, or an entire town. Trapped-location horror gets an automatic chance from me.
What horror setup does that for you?
I'll give almost any vampire story a chance. The premise can be ridiculous. If there are vampires, I'm listening.
What horror creature gets that automatic chance from you?
Time for some reading

What makes a horror book impossible to put down: seeing the monster, finding out who survives, or discovering how much worse it can get?
That last one is how one more chapter becomes five.
