Sure, Photograph 51 is cool, but if you really want to understand Rosalind Franklin's DNA research, you need to look at Photograph 49!
Congrats to @alistairsponsel.bsky.social & Brian Sutton on the publication of their compelling new @jhistbiol.bsky.social article!

The postwar funding boom in US physics came to a halt at the end of the 1960s, when officials in the Nixon administration made major cuts to the federal science budget. As historian Julia Menzel of @ihpst-uoft.bsky.social notes, the lessons learned then may be helpful to today’s scientists. #histSTM
OTD in 1836, HMS Beagle docked at Falmouth, after a 5 year voyage.
Charles Darwin wrote in his diary, “To my surprise and shame, I confess the first sight of the shores of England inspired me with no warmer feelings, than if it had been a miserable Portuguese settlement.”

A lot has changed at LHL, but Bill Ashworth’s posts remain consistently excellent. I particularly appreciate when he call attention to recent acquisitions as w/his Maestlin post from earlier this week.
