Buster Keaton's birthday! Famed actor, director, and writer. Best known for his silent films, he worked into the 1960s. Drafted into the AEF he went to France in 1918. Already well known, the AEF decided not to risk his life in the trenches and used him as an entertainer.

Pleased to have commented on Australian trench journals for the State Library of NSW's Openbook, as part of a piece on The Wipers Times and Talbot House. #FWW #TrenchJournals #WipersTimes #TalbotHouse www.sl.nsw.gov.au/stories/time...

Can a computer game recreate the experience of the #FWW?

This month we look at 'Gallipoli', from @blackmillgames.bsky.social. We discuss how history is translated into a computer game and where historical accuracy meets gameplay. 🗃️

I recently picked up a copy of “Over the Top” by Arthur Lambert. The author served with the HAC on the Western Front. My copy originally belonged to Horace G. Sennitt, who was in the same unit. He carefully made notations on the margins throughout the book. #WW1 #FWW #WesternFront #BritishArmy

Detail from the war memorial at Saint-Émilion (33). #1GM #WW1
#FWW

A French soldier of the Grande Guerre carved in the stone of a war memorial as if lying on his side propped on one elbow. Is he wounded? Is he dying? Is he on a reconnaissance patrol?
He wears the Adrian helmet, capote and equipment of a poilu including his bidon, or canteen. Faintly visible on his left arm are two or more stripes of insignia. Above the words « AUX ENFANTS DE St. EMILION MORTS POUR LA FRANCE 1914 - 1918 » and amongst palm fronds and alongside a cross is a raised likeness of an Adrian helmet.
The memorial appropriately, given the location, also features grape vines.

Georges Clemenceau born this day. Dominating presence in French politics in the late 19th and early 20th century. Initially on the sidelines criticizing the French government and war effort, after Allied disasters in 1917 France turned to him to lead.

111 years on from the first day of the battle of Loos.

10 men from Arbroath were killed that day. This puts it second only to Aubers Ridge as the towns costliest day of the Great War.

Robert St John Smith over at the Wipers Times Exposé has written a story about one of the Great War's famous cartoons, "Am I as Offensive as I Might Be?" Concise yet detailed, it's a brilliant piece about the illustrator, Ernest James Couzens RE.
