Water nymph, mud crawler, aerial master, and lethal spark of fire - the dragonfly holds all four corners of the wild. They are my fierce allies in the swamp and across the threshold of dreams. A quiet perch on an outstretched finger seals our bond. #FolkWitchFriday #Animism #FolkWitch

A first-person view of my outstretched left forearm against green grass. A real, metallic blue dragonfly perches calmly atop an upright middle finger, directly aligning with an intricate blue tattoo below of a winged skeleton key with dragonfly wings and a witch-foot symbol.

Down at the dirt line, toads are my quiet teachers. Pausing to commune with them roots me straight into the pulse of the Land - both here & the otherside. They aren't just garden visitors; they are sensitive barometers of soil, rain, & the unseen vitality here/there. #FolkWitchFriday #WitchSky

Otherworldly allies often step through dreams, carrying unmistakable signatures across the veil. Waking, I look to the sky: a hawk’s sudden cry, dusk owls, or a bluebird breaking pattern. When an animal insists on entering the conscious mind, I listen. #FolkWitchFriday #Animism #WitchSky

Working the swamp means knowing "The Landlord." When I asked for a deeper connection to Alligator, the waters answered with a found carcass. Cleaning the skull and working bone into poppets bridges the wild water to the bench. Flesh falls away; relationship remains.

Familiars in folk practice are living guardians at the sill. My dog Rebel woke us to 30ft flames engulfing a neighbor’s house. Our dog Freckles sounded an urgent alarm that saved my son’s life. Familiars keep watch over the threshold and our blood. #FolkWitchFriday #WitchSky #FolKWitch

Because I work so much on the Other Side, so is my Familiar. Their work is threshold work, being a liason, and mediating. They learn everything about how different spirits work (on both sides) while I'm able to find out what they need and how to make their lives easier.

The old idea of a familiar wasn't theatrical; it was domestic kinship. The yard dog guarding the gate, the porch cat watching the dusk, or the wild toad returning to the same stone step. How do the animals living alongside your home act as practical guardians and sentinels? #FolkWitchFriday

🍀🐇🍀An old English superstition says that to see a Hare is a sign of good luck, and a wish can be made as soon as it passes by.

I'm more the quiet type, muttering my spells usually -- tho some are completely quiet. It's nothing I plan; it's just my natural inclination. I use cadence to help me remember. I like to blow over my works to give life to them, but I'm a little wind-witchy that way. #FolkWitchFriday #WitchSky

Sound wasn't allowed because when you whisper, people had to strain to hear you. So they felt the universe bent low and listened to their whispers more than a shout or song.

Now did this originate from a lack of safety? Probably. 🫠

Repetition has always been what I end up with. Breathing out after each verse... like when giving life to something. Small chants just work for me. Mostly spoken.

My mother and grandmother worked in whispers. Sound was not allowed.

What about you?

@witchways.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 2:35 PM

I use many different techniques at different times. I have rhymes I sing for herb gathering; I sing and chant for big rituals to raise energy and send out the intention, and sometimes I use the modern "knot of one" spell. #FolkWitchFriday

My first memory of blood stopping: Mama cut her hand putting up creamed corn for the freezer. Granny grabbed the broom, swept down spiderwebs from the eave to pack the wound, and muttered Ezekiel 16:6. The bleeding ceased right there at the kitchen table. #FolkWitchFriday #WitchSky

Spoken traditions don't always require long verses. Sometimes the most effective practice is one personal word that serves as a quiet reset button - centering focus, clearing the room, & anchoring the moment through steady repetition. I have a word of power that serves this purpose. #FolkWitchFriday
