I had no idea that because the #OHSen and #FLSen elections are technically special elections, the winners will get be sworn in in December, not January.

Senate GOP majority could shrink sooner than you think A victory for former Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) this fall could shrink the GOP Senate majority right in the middle of the busiest legislative crunch of the year. That’s because incumbent Sen. Jon Husted’s (R-Ohio) current term expires on Dec. 15. The winner of the special election to fill the remaining two years of Vice President JD Vance’s Senate term could be sworn in immediately afterward. The exact timing would depend on several factors, including whether the race is close enough to trigger a recount, as well as when the results are certified. Election certifications came in early December for the last three Senate contests in Ohio — in 2018, 2022 and 2024. Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine appointed Husted in January 2025 to take Vance’s seat. But Brown, who lost to Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) in 2024, has been leading public polls in the contest since August. The fallout. The week of Dec. 14 is supposed to be the final week the Senate’s in session before the holiday break. But the lame duck could get incredibly messy. Government funding runs out Dec. 11. A GOP reconciliation bill boosting the Pentagon budget, raising the debt limit, AI regulation and permitting reform could all be in the mix. Senate GOP leaders may need every vote they can get. If Brown flips Ohio and is sworn in, Republicans’ Senate majority would narrow to a 52-48 split. The other special. There’s also a special election in November for the Florida Senate seat currently held by Sen. Ashley Moody (R-Fla.). Moody is leading Florida Democratic state Rep. Angie Nixon in most public polling, so this is less of a concern for Senate GOP leaders.

Would I pick us to win it? Probably not. But narrowing the margins substantially like this makes an ENORMOUS difference downballot, especially when FL’s gerrymander relies heavily on 2024/2022 coalitions to stay/get redder
