2. How much did it change what the filter knew afterwards?
The distinction turns out to be quite useful.
Have some cichlid portraits. 🐟 #photography #fishkeeping

Tap-water nitrate T is modelled separately as a slowly varying Gaussian random walk. That is an assumption, but a more plausible one than treating the supply as perfectly constant.

This is the same mathematics as the “nearly constant velocity” model used in target tracking: N takes the role of position and r of velocity.
[3/10]
My hidden state is
x = (N, r, T)
with r the net accumulation rate and T the nitrate concentration of the tap water.

It has also been a useful excuse to revise some Bayesian filtering. I am not a probabilist in my day job.

Two of them recently started a brood, and the others also act as a pair.
Any cichlid experts around here who could give a possible explanation for that? Thanks a lot in advance!
This ist my group of 4 firemouth cichlids (Thorichthys meeki), busy with their ritualised negotiations of rank orders. In their phaenotype, they''re all male (pointed dorsal fin, genital papillae). But there's something weird about them.
Your TDS pen measures how much is dissolved in your tank, not what it is. I made a 2-minute doodle on what that number means, why it creeps up between water changes, and why shrimp care. #aquarium #fishkeeping youtu.be/Z8--_iAjmMc
So, when you buy neon tetras catched from the wild for your aquariums, you can do that (mostly) without remorse. But that can be different with other fish species.
My 3 green neon tettas are remnants from a larger swarm. By now, they are 8 years old, but still vital. Sometimes they look like blue sparks that flare up in front of a dark background.

Currently working on my next aquarium which will be the last setup for a while but my first opti-white tank. A gift to myself and here is a bit of the process as a sneak-peak before it‘s finished.
