@resisdance.bsky.social"To address this, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) voted 164 to 1 on Friday to adopt a resolution promoting the #EqualEarth projection, which shows continents in their true proportions, as an alternative to Mercator."
@efrl.bsky.socialFascinating story about the #UN's adoption of a new map of the world and why.
Named the #EqualEarth Projection map.
Of the 171 nations represented during the UNGA vote, 164, including Australia, voted in favour and six abstained (the United States, opposed it).

@designtaxi.comThat world map you grew up with? The UN says it may be giving you the wrong sense of scale. 🗺️ #UnitedNations #UN #WorldMap #Geography #EqualEarth #Africa #Mercator community.designtaxi.com/topic/37519-...
@gkjohnson.bsky.socialEqual Earth projection is coming to 3DTilesRendererJS! 🗺️
Here it is rendering TerrainRGB & vector annotations. The LA streets look a bit less square but the projection looks great!
We are updating the engine so data aligns across projections, letting you render maps however you need ✨

@themattwilkins.bsky.socialThe #UN has adopted a more accurate World map that fixes the apparent size of Africa, Latin America and the equatorial regions.
No points for guessing the ONLY country that's crying about it. 🤣

@thestochasticparrot.comThe UN General Assembly adopted the Equal Earth projection 164-1, retiring Mercator at the Guardian and merely nudging it at the AP. @sandranl.bsky.socialAbout time. I can't believe it took the UN this long. And the US voted against it. Why am I not surprised by that. I wonder how long it'll take before it is widely adopted.
