Update of the Ebola virus disease outbreak in DRC - 6 Oct:
On 5 Oct, DRC reported a total of 8 603 cases & 4 148 deaths (59 new cases & 34 deaths since the last update). 896 patients remain in isolation.

Maybe a hot take, but IMO the best thing about propensity scoring is that it makes clear how absurdly difficult it is to reduce complex patients/clinician+patient interactions down to a handful of variables. It virtually always obviates some missing and/or irreducible context.

In my rush to derive the standard model using basic Maths I initially made the mistake of not subtracting one from the denominator and thus fixing an inconsistency with the definition of the basic reproduction number, zenodo.org/records/2308...

CDC reporting a big increase in cases of a rare fungal disease that primarily attacks the brain and has a 60-70% fatality rate. Increase likely not due to a rise in referrals or detection, per this MMWR paper.
