I’m going to have to set an alarm to remind me that I now live in an earlier timezone. Until this year the chats were at 9 EST. Ugh! #ElemMathChat

Just imagine, you know you're supposed to get the p all alone...but it has a - in front of it, and it's not at the beginning of the left side. So many traps! And not a scrap of sense making. #ElemMathChat

@ryanflessner.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 2:24 AM

I agree. One of my favorite things is to have kids (and pre-service teachers and inservice teachers) tell me the story of the equation...ESPECIALLY when there's a variable involved. #ElemMathChat

I think "algebra" is seen as this thing where we introduce variables and weird notation and we're somehow doing something new, and not a thing where we are adding new and efficient notation to the algebraic reasoning we've been doing all along. #ElemMathChat

I was going to ask, but thought I'd do some googling first! #ElemMathChat

Hi @anneliserecord.bsky.social Thanks for joining! #ElemMathChat

DAVID you know my favorite way to explain what does and does not distribute is your Tower of Operations™ ... wonderful for my HS students who distribute willy-nilly.

It's a sad truth. I love books like Connecting Arithmetic to Algebra (Schifter, Russell, & Bastable). We HAVE help students make connections to Algebra BEFORE they get to Algebra! Algebra shouldn't be the scary monster lurking at the end of middle school/beginning of high school. #ElemMathChat

Oh, I have given away hundreds and hundreds of books - no kidding. I only kept the very best ones! I have told myself that I need to now go physically hold each one in my hand and cull that way. If it speaks to my heart when it is in my hand NOPE staying! LOL #ElemMathChat

Credit goes to Barbara Dougherty, who I think was at the U of Mizzou when she published this tidbit, then at U of Hawaii. Alas, I don't have the actual citation. #ElemMathChat

Love this definition! It’s the one I share all the time. #ElemMathChat

@mfannie.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 2:16 AM

I'd be okay with that! It does make me wonder if every Tiny Library in @triangleman.bsky.social 's neighborhood has seen Which One Doesn't Belong? or How Did You Count?" pass through, or if he's more subtle than that. #ElemMathChat

There's someone on FB in a Secondary Math Ed group... who keeps promoting prime factorization (good!) but wants Ss to know PF for 1-25 "automatically"...
I really am uncomfortable going with a "memorize these" strategy instead of a (more) powerful divisibility rule strategy.

So well stated. Thank you! #ElemMathChat

"Studies" have shown that if you ask kids to solve 12 - p = 5, they freak out. Ask them to solve 12 - [box] = 5, they think you're an idiot and say, "7! Why are you asking a stupid question?" The variable makes folx think they're supposed to "do" something rather than think. #ElemMathChat

Luckily, @mnmmath.bsky.social and I don't live nearby. We'd probably be taking them! 🤣😂🤣 #ElemMathChat

Just a few examples that number sense *is* algebra. It's just that we don't usually write it down with letters. Indeed, the desire to somehow describe what you're allowed to do, no matter what the numbers are, is what should make the letters appear in the first place. #ElemMathChat

@ryanflessner.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 2:13 AM

I love this example. Thank you for offering it. Now my mind is spinning about ways to share this with the MS & HS teachers I'm working with. #ElemMathChat

Reppin' the Dawgs. Hope @butleru.bsky.social sees that pic! 🤣 #ElemMathChat

I can report that every math-y book I have left in my next door neighbors' Tiny Library over the years has disappeared. I am hopeful they have found good homes and cultivated lots of great discussion. I don't regularly check on the ones further from home. #ElemMathChat
