EDGAR DEGAS (1834 - 1917), “At the Milliner’s (Chez la Modiste)”, c. 1882. Museum of Modern Art, New York City US. Edgar Degas made 27 artworks of Parisian milliners.

Edgar Degas made 27 artworks of Parisian milliners, 19 of them in pastel (as this one is at the Museum of Modern Art). His family were cotton brokers and he had a particular interest in fabrics and trimmings and the very latest fashions. Pastel is a particularly fine medium for drawing the textures of feathers, velvets and ribbons. In the 1880s, there were approximately 1,000 milliners in Paris – hat shops that catered to women of all classes, for whom a beautiful hat was indispensable (she would not go outside without one). Degas, like his Impressionist friends, chose to capture modern life in his art, drawing everyday people doing everyday things. In “At the Milliner’s”, he paints a very happy customer being attended to by an eager shop girl, who is holding alternative hats in case the customer is not fully pleased with the hat she is already trying on. Degas’ enthusiasm for photography inspired him to use unusual cropping in his compositions, and here he cuts off much of the head and body of the shop girl. She is obviously not the main subject of his pastel. A top milliner at this time could make a good income; the milliner did the hat designing and oversaw those adding the appropriate trimmings while the shop girl interacted directly with the customers. Even so, the women were artisans and were not social equals of their clientele.

Edgar Degas
"Dance Class at the Opera" (1872)
oil on canvas | 32.7 × 46.3 cm (12.9 × 18.2 in).
Musée d'Orsay, Paris, France
#ArtSky #Degas

This famous painting is Dance Class at the Opera (also known as Le Foyer de la danse à l'Opéra de la rue Le Peletier), created by the French Impressionist master Edgar Degas in 1872.

Key Details & Context:
The Setting: It depicts the dance rehearsal room of the old Paris Opera house on the rue Le Peletier, which tragically burned down shortly after the painting was finished in 1873.
The Figures: To the right, the esteemed ballet master Louis François Mérante stands dressed in white, guiding the class alongside a seated violinist.
Degas' Style: This work is notable as one of Degas' earliest masterworks focused on ballet dancers. Rather than focusing on grand stage performances, he preferred capturing the unglamorous, candid moments behind the scenes—dancers stretching, resting, adjusting their slippers, or waiting for instructions.
