A reflection I heard from someone who recently moved from the military to #cdnpse: “Universities are more hierarchical than the armed forces.” Another terrifying line from a staff person: “I will only confide in my boss, b/c my colleagues would stab me in the back if I show vulnerability.” Yikes!
Yeah, exactly. The piece comes across suggesting that the university community isn’t pulling its weight when the problem lies at the top. Most university presidents I have worked/studied under, were authoritarians who rarely represented the vibrant community of scholars at their institution. #cdnpse
This is a good summary of @alexusherhesa.bsky.social ‘s post on the “Concordia Revolution.” It contrasts with what I posted yesterday, & reminds me of Ray Ivany’s time at Acadia in the early-2010s, where he had to fix a decade plus of bad Presidential leadership. #cdnpse

Turns out I forgot to link to this piece. In sum, it is everyone else’s problem that university presidents cannot build followers. The way Stoicheff depicts the community, & the role of the President, is simplistic & part of the problem. #university #cdnpse - universityaffairs.ca/opinion/it-t...

There is a lot to consider here, but this piece doesn’t delve into the fiduciary responsibility of boards of governors/trustees for this situation. This is a problem. Universities are not fiefdoms of their Presidents. Weak boards must be addressed. www.chronicle.com/article/high... #pse #cdnpse

The headline here is provocative, but I am on board with the general thrust of this interview: for those of us working with #undergraduates, our institutions must become “radically more communal.” www.chronicle.com/article/harv... #cdnpse #pse #CommunityOfScholars
