Life ticks slow against the pane,
A shadow dancing in the rain.
You count your steps, you count your scars,
And count the falling of the stars.
The morning breaks from darkened skies,
A quiet dawn through red-rimmed eyes.
No heavy crown, no fading stage,
Just the turning of another page.
Step from shade and take a breath,
Beyond the doubt, beyond the death
Of yesterday's relentless rain—
There is a hand to ease the pain.

Soft syllables wedged
in the walls of the chest,
the fluff of our daydreams
put up to the test.

Let the winter wind wail
at the hinges and glass;
these paper-thin echoes
will let no storm past.

As shadows close in
where the hearth-embers fade;
we are safe in the shelter
our quiet has made.

The hands move across a worldly face,
Never staying for a second glance,
Moments gone before you settle into place,
Forever left behind in this unyielding dance.

Almost the rhythm matches your stride,
But no—the vanishing horizon calls,
