An anna's hummingbird works these pretty flowers in the Boyce Thompson Arboretum #photography #birbs #wildlife

A hummingbird with iridescent magenta feathers on the side of its face is hovering under a downward facing orange flower blossom, bill stuffed deep into the flower. The wing motion is caught with a bit of a blur. The flower takes up most of the image with some darker green out of focus background peeking through.

Just a moment later, the bird has moved slightly for another angle at the flower, wings caught in a swept-back position as it hovers in the air

I file grackles within the sassy bird classification, and as such they are some of my favorites. This character is a boat tailed grackle, in Assateague State Park. #photography #birbs

Just a moment later, the grackle has smoothed its feathers and is gazing up towards the upper left corner of the image.

This great horned owl in the Sweetwater Wetlands was being beset on all sides, hassled by both a cooper's hawk and a couple of ravens. Very exasperating! #photography #birbs #wildlife

A great horned owl perches on top of a thick cottonwood branch that slopes upwards from the lower left to the center-right edge of the frame; the owl is facing upwards looking towards the upper right corner. There is a tangle of small cottonwood twigs around the owl, and some light sky shines through from behind.

Here the owl is in the exact same spot but turns her head to look down towards the ground.

Now the owl gazes outwards, looking sort of above the camera (the ravens were circling around up there)
