It turned to the desk and finally began to work. It had a flesh welder already primed and loaded with cellular glue, and a wad of soaked paper towels that was set beside it by that same puttering drone. It began to wipe away the globs of blood from its shoulder. The injury on its forearm spilled black onto the towels underneath it, and those towels became the dark ceiling above him in his bedroom. Yawning and vacuous, like the void that had long since expanded in his body to encompass every emotion he had ever felt.

It nodded, finally found enough escape velocity to take a seat on the couch, as far from him as it could get. Eight crossed its legs and did… nothing. Its phone was in its hand in no time, but there was little it felt like doing beyond staring blankly at the black screen. It was thinking, ruminating, hating. But most of all, it was avoiding its reflection in the glass, tilting the phone in a way that it could continue to pretend it was not real. Much better, it figured, to feel like some distant, ethereal observer— for all participants in this world were greatly flawed. But Eight was like Nano... it was meant to be perfect.
