I’ve been helping a family friend digitize her dad’s LA newspaper clippings, which is how I first learned about Lou Almada. Friend's dad was a star baseball player for Los Angeles High School in 1925, but he wasn’t THE star. That was Louis Almada. #baseballhistory

LA Times (June 1925):

Photo of my friend's dad's newspaper clipping from the LA Times sports page (June 9, 1925) titled “LA High Wins City Baseball Title.”

ALMADA PITCHES NO-HIT A GAME IN SEVEN INNINGS / Jefferson Loses First Game in Two Years; Pioneers Win Third Flag in Five Seasons.

His lips pressed into a tight grim line; keen black eye taking in every minute detail of play; a worried hunted look constantly on his face; pitching his very life out before a crowd of 3000 fans who watched amazed and silent as inning after inning went by without taking an iota of speed or control from his matchless arm. This is Louie Almada--the biggest man in the City League today.

Herbert White can thank Almada for the third championship his teams have won in the past five years. And Bill Lopez can thank Almada for the first defeat his teams have sustained in two years. Almada, aided greatly by his mates' batting and fielding, defeated Jefferson, 4 to 1, at Housh Field yesterday and brought the city flag to his school after an unbroken string of other Jefferson hit, a spinner that traveled ten feet down the third-base line in the ninth inning.

WARREN POUNDED HARD
The Blue and White batsmen pounded Roy Warren for ten hits and four runs. But whether they could have done so well if their pitcher had worked less effectively, is a question. When L. A. met Hollywood, the Romans proved beyond a doubt that they couldn’t play winning ball with anybody but Almada in the box:
Long after people stop talking about the tremendous clash tween two unbeaten teams, they will be telling about the stocky little left-hander who turned back a team of veterans out for blood and the City League title.
