📚 ‘Gangs’ is full of bad people! There are gangsters who live like kings + liars/cheats who care only for their survival. But the worst is “the Sleeper” because he believes everything he does is for the greater good. There’s nothing scarier than a villain who thinks he’s right.

With a tired sigh she shrugged it off and went about filling the water bowls. It wasn’t until she began cracking open can’s of wet food that the furry monsters surged into the kitchen to join her. Gizmo doing his best to trip her, while Kali leapt up onto the counter like she owned it, and Sauron watched imperiously from the door. Bethan smiled and began telling them about her day as she put out the cat food and turned to assess her own options. Cooking had never been her strong suit but she’d master the art of the casserole and the take out container. The current tuna monstrosity was a comfort food. A meal her mother had made often out of necessity. Still it was one of a few good memories, and Bethan savored every bite each time she made it.

From my Epic Fantasy novel Demon’s Bargain. After Kahyla’s Dancing Day ceremony making Despard her Paer or spiritual father, the gang speculate on Bizal’s motives.

“Mother never agreed to marry him. It would have cost her the manor,” Kahyla said. “But my father couldn’t marry the princess. To get the law sending her to the Academy through the Joint Council, the Patricians added a requirement that any suitor for the princess would have to own land in Silvern Barony. That shut down negotiations for a marriage alliance to the heathen Northmen but also Bizal.” “And kicked off a rather disastrous war for Huxen,” said Malgrim with a wry grimace. “So could Bizal see you as a way to restart his plans with the princess? Marry you for some land in Silvern Barony, then press his suit with the princess on the way to the crown?” “Ew, why would I marry Bizal? He’s ancient,” Kahyla said, pulling the ties of her wrap tighter. “Despard would never approve the contract. Bizal can’t make me marry him.” Despard stood taller, flexing his cut hand. “I won’t let him. Not on my watch.” “Oh? You’re immune to torture? Or threats to torture Kahyla?” snapped Malgrim. “Right now, he’s expecting Despard to hand over a helpless scared girl who’ll gladly make him her Paer to protect her from the Terricks. He’s not expecting some ignorant Ferruthan rube has beaten him to the punch.” Malgrim leaned on the table, absently tapping a rhythm. “Could we hide her?
