Gus took a long pull of his ale, though he did not finish it this time. “What do you mean take our time? Do you enjoy wearing these skin suits? And the fibrous coverings humans require over them? Or the boiled vegetation native to the area?” He finished his drink and poured another. Devon did in fact enjoy his experiences in human form. He enjoyed feeling water surrounding his form in a lake, the warmth of the sun on his face in the morning, and ale – especially ale. He finished his drink and poured the remains of the pitcher into his mug.

She watched them go, then returned her attention to the silver sphere resting in its docking collar, shimmering and refracting in the halogen floodlights. What are you? she wondered. What had she brought aboard? A mad impulse ran through her, a sudden desire to suit up, float across the hangar bay, just to touch it, to run gloved hands over its surface. Absurd, of course. She had said they would proceed with caution, and so they would. And Lieutenant Malaki was right: they couldn’t return to Earth, nor any colony world, not with an alien probe in their hold. She must act as though they were already a quarantined vessel, as if Accipiter were a plague ship of old. Destined to wander the stars until they determined there was no threat — but how she could ever decide such a thing? She couldn’t. Her people would learn all they could, but in the end, she suspected the decision wouldn’t even be hers. Something this unprecedented, of this potential importance… no, their fate would be decided by officers vastly more senior than she. Probably even the Magellanix board of directors themselves, those mythical figures, whispered of but never seen, who ultimately governed all their lives. But all of that lay ahead. She had other business to conduct in this system first. Accipiter had a hold full of sleeping contractors, an entire resupply force; they had their weaponry, too late to do anyone any good, and enough gear and equipment to turn what once been a field station into a permanent presence on that frozen world. It was time to return to Ragnarock at last.

Daryl played an introduction while Ms Cavendish herded the dancers into position. He started into the melody and the dancers began the routine rather haphazardly. One or two bumped into each other. Ms Cavendish slapped her palm to her forehead. Then she clapped her hands severely and shouted “Stop!” Daryl stopped playing and the dancers came to a halt. “Don't be too hard on them,” said Daryl. “Those suits take a lot of getting used to. I tried one out myself. Really difficult to dance in them.” “You dance?” “You taught me to dance yourself.” She looked at him for a moment, then snapped her fingers. “Daryl!” she cried, and ran light-footedly over to hug him, then clapped her hands again and said, “From the top!”

Angel’s sweet smile came out. “I don’t remember you being part of this op, Hannah.” Hannah glared at her. “Backup.” “In Spider’s territory.” Gabe’s voice was sharp. Oh, she was in trouble. “From a secret crawlspace. They didn’t know I was there.” “Someone owes Grandma a favor.” Sam’s singsong tone made her want to punch them. “No, Jonesy owed me one. I’m not stupid.” Gabe’s eyes were cold. “Debatable, in this instance.” And Angel apparently didn’t want to be left out. “Well, do you have anything to add to this sordid story? Or did you just risk yourself, without any of us knowing, for nothing?” Hannah rounded on her. “One, having backup for Ed was not nothing. Two, my crew were on standby to give you the deets if one or both of us didn’t come out. Again, I’m not fucking stupid and this isn’t my first fucking rodeo.” Angel, wearing a gold bodysuit with matching eyes, blew her a kiss. “Fine. Answer the question.” Hannah blew out a breath and tried to tamp down her irritation. “When Maven shifted into officer mode, she did it so completely it was like looking at a different person. Which means I have no idea how much of Maven is Maven.” Ed’s eyes flicked to her and away. She winced internally, because yeah, she had no idea how much of Ed was Ed either “That makes her much more of a wildcard. Will she follow what we’ve come to expect as Spider’s two-IC, or will she do something else?” She closed her eyes, visualizing the scene. “The way she looks at you, Ed. It’s possessive, in both personas. But also… I feel like she likes that she doesn’t have to pretend with you. Do you thinks that’s off base?”

“Daughter of the Vasiljev clan!” a man’s voice shouted out from somewhere, amplified through a horn or conch. Strange that he would use her mother’s given name. That was supposed to be a secret. “We seek not confrontation nor quarrel with you. We only wish to talk.” Merideth squeezed her sister’s tail hard but said nothing. What could there possibly be to discuss with people who sewed her sister up in a padded body suit, year over year? Who had such a collection of disfigured corpses in their waste? She had to admit she was intensely curious of the motivations of her sister’s acquisition, the purpose of this place and these people, but not enough to jeopardize their lives. What was happening here would need to remain a mystery. Anastasia considered a whisper to explain to her sister, but that would risk more visible breath to reveal an invisible mouth. Merideth would just have to trust her.

He couldn't say much on vid without risking his own legal suits, but the real battleground was on the message boards. One of his first operations after leaving the planet was to secure a few stealth satellites he was certain Peak Zenith couldn't detect. The Sagittarian Transit Authority didn't have any reason to keep the citizens disconnected, but they also didn't have any incentive to prevent Peak Zenith mercenaries from sabotaging the satellites—or simply blasting them out of the sky—to keep his people in the dark. And to keep the galaxy in the dark about Nereus. Those days were over. Nereusians, fans and revolutionaries alike, were forcing their way onto galactic social networks, and Rei was paving the way for them. He took a twisted kind of pleasure in seeing everything go off the rails.

She made a knick. “Greetings, you must be the one who they called Max…” Jerry raised his eyebrows, surprised that she correctly deduced the name, which she only heard once. “...and I’m terribly sorry, for I cannot say without a doubt whether you prefer to be addressed as Lady or Mister or somehow else.” Max raised their eyebrows. He was used to some insults from arrested or drunk men every time he came up from the lab, so this was a pleasant change. “Mister is fine,” Max said. “Splendid, I will remember it like this, Mister Max. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.” “Likewise,” Max said and gestured to her to sit back down, which Aerina did. Max put the medical case on Jerry's desk, ignoring all the documents there. “Nice costume, where did you get it from?” “It was tailored on my form by Legier&Watson in New Jersey.” “Hm, I’ve never heard of that shop,” Max was putting on nitrile gloves while talking. “And it's personalised. That must've been expensive.” “Yes, indeed. I have to take good care of it. He made everything worse for us.” “We wouldn’t have met.” She blinked, stepping back to register what he said. “What?” Jacques shrugged. “I’m not saying it’s all positives, but we wouldn’t know each other if everything didn’t happen as it did. Not saying it had a reason to, far from it, but there’s a little good in it all. I think they call it a silver lining.” Now she laughed for real. Clutching her stomach and bending over, tears in her eyes. She wanted to call it stupid. How could her being Dorg’s prized lockpicker be anything worthwhile? Yet he was right, in a way. They’d never have met. Never shared a moment under the moonlight sky nor have conveyed her secrets to him. One thing she didn’t miss about Timberstill was the loneliness she had for a young girl her age.

But I was shocked to see them in basically full riot gear. Body armor, helmet with a mirrored visor. The whole thing, just missing a shield. One in front of my door, so close I could have breathed on the back of their neck, the other in front of the only other door I could strain my neck to see, with line of sight to my door."
