“Aaron? Are you awake?”

His voice gently wakes me up, I look over from my sleeping position on my back, he is looking at me as he is propped up on an elbow. He looks like he just had a ‘come to Jesus moment’. “Kind of, what time is it?”

“It’s three in the morning. I had an idea, but before you answer … hear me out, completely. No interjecting with your thoughts half way through.” He gives me this look he’s been giving me since we were kids, the look like I am about to argue with him, but he knows me pretty well.

I roll my eyes but sit up, “Fine. I will shut my big fucking mouth until you’re done. But, you know I hate when you start off a conversation like that.”

He sits up as well, “Yeah yeah. You know what you do, don’t make me say it out loud.” He turns to look at me, sitting crossed-legged on the bed. “What if, instead of trying to cancel this honeymoon and shit… you come with me instead?”

My eyes are now fully open as I stare at him, trying to process what exactly was happening, what he was asking. I sat there for a few minutes, my brain trying to figure out the proper thing to say without sounding like a crazy person.

“Race you to the gate.”

Before I can even respond, he is already booking it through the airport. I let out a surprised, joyful laugh as I started jogging to catch up with him, “Hey! No fair. You cheated.” I weave through the crowds, slipping in between people and service animals, a stupid grin on my face as I laugh. I trail behind him a bit as we get to our destination gate. I’m panting softly, the stupid, boyish grin not leaving my face. “You didn’t win fair and square, asshole.”

He lets out this breathless laugh, a smile lighting up his whole face, “You were the one in track and field, what happened to your record-breaking speed, Daxton? Old age catching up with you?”

“Old age!?” I act mock offended. “I’ll have you know I haven’t even reached my prime yet.” I playfully nudge him as he walks to the counter, handing the gate attendant his boarding pass. I follow suit before heading into the plane with him. We find our seats, business-class again, and sit down. “Okay, you said you also brought Maximum Overdrive, don’t think I forgot, we are definitely watching that.”

“Enzo!” I yelled from the bottom of the stairs, trying not to sound too annoyed with the delay. “You look fine, get down here so we can go. We’re going to be late.”

Enzo appeared at the top of the stairs wearing the tailored suit we had just purchased.

“My my, Enzo, you look absolutely ravishing. I think I am going to be the envy of everyone at this party.”

A small sound between a giggle and a groan came out of Enzo’s lips. “Shut up. You say that regardless of what I wear.”

“And regardless of what you wear, you are the most gorgerous man in any room. Are you ready to go or do I have to come up there and get you? I cannot promise if I do, we shall leave right away either.”

Enzo playfully rolled his eyes as he started down the steps, “I just got dressed and now you want to undress me? Eron, please.”

As Enzo got to the bottom of the steps, I nipped at his bottom lip, “You’re most gorgeous when you’re naked.”

“What are they doing?” I was leaned up against the other side of the window, observing the police talk to the owner of the motel. They had been in there for almost twenty minutes. “We should have left last night. We messed up. How do we fix this?”

Kyle’s brows were furrowed as he typed on his laptop, “They were at least a weeks drive away when we got here there is no way that caught up this quick. Do you think the motel manager said something?”

I looked over at Kyle, “Probably. Did you see the latest numbers for information on us? It’s up to like, three million or something.”

Kyle’s eyes snapped up at me, “You sound impressed? Why are you impressed?”

“I don’t know, that seems like a lot of money to catch the three of us.”

“Do you think that’s all together or per person?” Kennedy, who had been dead quiet spoke up, “Because if it’s three million a piece, that’s a pretty hefty price tag for our heads. That would be impressive, my mom would be proud.”

I looked at Merick, a sullen frown on my face. “His brother is still there. His twin brother.”

Merick’s face went through several different emotions - surprise, disgust, anger - before landing on resolute. “What are you planning?”

One thing I could also count of Merick for was support, regardless of what was happening at the current time and point.

“I think it is time to end the Dark Fang nation, would you not agree?” I took the knife from my pocket and stuck it on the map right through their territory. “I want what is mine and I am willing to take it with any force necessary. If I have to kill every single Dark Fang alpha in order to bring home my omega mate, I will.”

“You already have a mate.”

I snapped, “It is one of the same, Merick. Both of them are mine. Dark Fang currently has something the belongs to me and I want it back. Are you with me in this or are you out?”

“Yuri.” Merick gently spoke, “I will always be with you. Let’s go retrieve your second mate.”

Noble was quiet, looking over the plans sitting on the dining room table, the fire crackling behind him as his mouth moved as he read the words.

“Do you always move your mouth when you read, hunter?”

Noble’s eyes snapped up, an unamused look on his face as he stared at me. “It helps me memorize the words.”

“Is it because you’re still so young?”

His jaw tightened as his eyes narrowed, “I am 245 years old, vampire. I am not a child.”

“And I am 4,505 years old. To me, everyone is a child.” I gave him a cheeky grin as I watched him scoff.

“Whatever. You asked me to come here. Now you insult me?”

“No, I asked you not to meddle in my personal affairs, you wouldn’t leave well enough alone, so here we are.“

He had no retort, he only grumbled in response.

I don’t catch myself as I watch him walk, how he kneels down with Den and Ava and just … exists. And he’s mine. He’s my boyfriend. This man is … mine.

Steph does though, she catches on quicker than a turtle on a skateboard as she follows me gaze to exactly where I am looking. “Is there something on your mind, Daxton?” Her voice is teasing but with a warm under it all. “You looking at anything … specific?”

“We’re dating.” The words tumble out before I can think them over. Immediately, within probably half a millisecond, I look over at her and let out an awkward half-laugh that doesn’t quite land fully. “Fuck. Yeah. We’re dating.”

Steph just looks at me, her mouth half-hung open. I can almost see the cogs trying to turn in her head, the little people that work in her brain are trying to get the system back online. There is a silence that drags on forever, which starts to make me nervous. And then, as quickly as it started, she let out an ear-piercing squeal, knocking the chair over as she tackled me in mine, her arms wrapping around me in a hug I didn’t know she had the strength for. “You are NOT!”

I would be lying to myself and to everyone else in my life if I didn’t admit I was having a meltdown. I had gone to bed with a sick, injured black cat and woken up next to another man.

At first, I could have sworn I was either still sleeping or having some medication-induced hullucinations about the whole thing. I would have believed that if not for the fact I reached over and touched him. The bandages from the previous night that were on the abdomen of a house cat were now on the skin of a human male.

Then he spoke, in a deep voice, looking straight at me as my fingers traced the bandages carefully. “Good Morning, Human. Thank you for taking care of these wounds last night. I had, sadly, been in an altercation with another cat who, much to my jargon, was not another shapeshifter in disguise”

Now, standing up on my bedroom floor, with a pointed finger at the man in my bed, I was trying to come up with words that could explain the absolute shock and astonishment.

“What? Have you never seen a shapeshifter before?” He said, so fucking calmly.
