"The Cherub That Eluded the Optics" (Kodak Tri-X 400)

"The dead have no need of angels. It is the angels who need the dead — otherwise, they have no one left to pray for."

#FilmPhotography #35mm #35mmFilm #BlackAndWhite #Monochrome #believeinfilm #film #ClassicMono #bnw #angel #SoftFocus #Cemetery

Stone has folded hands - angel gazes down, blurred, soft, leaves whisper their shade. The focus drifted away, but the shadow remained - a memory of something that doesn’t need to be clear. The angel doesn’t ask; it simply exists, a mistake of light turned into meaning. Here, sharpness is replaced by breath - and it feels more alive than stone. Location: Moscow. The Donskoy Monastery. Necropolis. Series: Variations on a theme «...with a film across Moscow» Camera: Nikon Lite Touch Zoom 120 ED (AF) (№3431629) Film: Kodak Professional Tri-X 400 Black and White Negative Film (expired, storage conditions unknown; shot at nominal ISO) Photo taken: 13/09/2018 Scanner: Pakon F235+ Philosophy: “Sometimes obscurity is the only way to see the truth.”Closer - and more dread: angel reaches toward the lens, focus slipped away. Two frames. One subject. Neither in focus. The focus flew away — like a soul, like meaning, like the very idea of a sharp image. The angel at the necropolis of the Donskoy Monastery has been standing here for decades, perhaps centuries. It is used to being looked at. But on this September day in 2018, it refused to be captured. The Nikon Lite Touch Zoom 120 ED tried — and missed. The expired Tri-X 400, stored under unknown conditions, added its own grain, its own unpredictability. And here we are — two blurred angels. One looks down, hands folded. The other — almost head-on, almost threatening, almost embracing. Both — out of focus. Both — more alive than any sharp frame ever could be. Because blur is not a defect. Blur is a state of being. The angel does not want to be a document. The angel wants to be a sensation. Location: Moscow. The Donskoy Monastery. Necropolis. And so, restraining myself, I suppress the cry that calls out to it." — Rainer Maria Rilke, Duino Elegies (First Elegy)

No filter.
Just the sky showing off in gold.
Sometimes you don’t need the whole scene.
Just the feeling 🧡
