One after the other, the streetlights flickered to life and bathed the street in their warm, orange glow. Julie’s lips curved into a small private smile as the trees along the street rustled, just beginning to surrender to autumn. When she’d first moved to California, she hadn’t expected the trees to lose their leaves. Julie had incorrectly assumed that because it was warm enough for her to skip wearing a jacket in winter, the leaves would also find it warm enough to skip their dormancy. It's a stretch, so please, stretch with me)~ *Sharp.* That was Bunibo's reaction pon unpawwing two trembly, teary eyes. *Oh. A sharp, sharp thing.* Everything in Bunibo’s world, Bunibo knows. Though be they decrepit, dilapitated, debunked, destroyed, disposed, other “d” words— the pieces are known. Even beyond belief is recognition found. Before this, after that, until now—she knows what they are. Or were. Or how. *Bunibo did not know this.* It is the biggest thing she has ever seen. The endless black void she knew as sky simply… wasn’t. Anymore. Not an alteration of pigmentation, nooo—a total shift of semblence. Different. *Wrong?* It’s very red. Just red. Endless red. Red forever. Red made of feathers. Brusque blazing brush-bristles decorating each-all edge red red as [leaves long beyond bloomtimes] red that togethers all together then severs red unto aether red. Red. Something is so beautiful about it. So red and sharp. At the end of all is an endless knife, carving through the skies below, redly. Paws outstretched, Bunibo reaches into red.

Sareena did her best not to smirk as the monk paced back and forth, spewing the delightfully absurd plans of someone who had never been to Arak’shiir, only fought demons in her own backyard—and listening to a volcano erupting was far different from dancing around its mouth as lava rained around you. Even though, technically, they were all dancing with lava on their feet at the moment. She had the determination, and most importantly, the bitterness. Those wouldn’t be enough, though, not anymore. “You’re going to get yourself killed as soon as you set foot on that layer.” Sonya stopped pacing with one foot midair. She put it back down and crossed her arms. “I’ve fought Kano before, and he has no dirty tricks left. Besides, I know how to deal with demons. You’ve seen it yourself.” “Have I?” Sareena’s tail brushed the monk’s wrist, her elbow, all the way up to that strong jawline she had spent an embarrassing amount of her day lost in. “No, I don’t think so.” Sonya scoffed and opened her mouth to argue, but all that came out was a yelp when the tail lassoed her waist and pulled her in. The monk stumbled and broke her fall with one hand on each side of Sareena’s head. “See? Such easy prey.” To add insult to injury, she skimmed the tip of her tail along Sonya’s cheek, chuckling as it reddened. For someone who acted all tough around the boys, she surely got flustered easily near the girls. Or at least when near me. Pride widened Sareena’s grin while Sonya’s frown deepened. “You distracted me.” “What? Are you expecting demons to play fair?” “Of course not. But I’ve never met a demon who is as”—her gaze travelled across Sareena’s mouth while strong legs straddled her—“maddening as you.”

I finally make my way to the biting, salty air of the back patio after darkness has muffled the neighborhood. In the storage room, the hatch is open exactly as I left it. I find a suitable old tarp stuffed in a corner and take it with me as I grip the flashlight between my teeth and head back down into the depths. But when I get to the bottom of the ladder, my body is gone. It doesn’t register at first. I shine the flashlight all around, sure I’ve just forgotten where exactly I set the corpse down, that maybe it was a bit further away than I recall. But it’s definitely not here, and worse, there are scuff marks on the ground and a dark smudge of dried blood where I’d left it.
