“Watch it there.” Jakob grinned and offered a hand while the other held his wealthy mistress around her skinny waste. The PI peeled herself off the concrete. Jeremy’s coworker dove and tackled her. Miriam kicked the man off and rolled to her feet as Jeremy burst from the doors, scanned the lot, and furiously sprinted at her. The barefoot Jeremy caught her scarf, yanked it off, and lost it when Jakob slammed him with one hand over the bushes and into the restaurant wall. The mistress grinned and laughed as she mindlessly pawed the Incubus’ shapely form. “Thanks jackass!” The fraught PI hurdled a shrub and slid around the corner. Jeremy snarled at Jakob who grinned in return before the suit wiped a trickle of blood from his nose and gave chase to Miriam. Jakob’s intrigue and attention remained locked to Miriam’s flight until the mistress grabbed his junk, bit his arm, and growled at him. “I’m not hungry for Asian anymore, let’s get you into my bed.” She laughed eagerly when the Incubus turned his attention to her, pinched her sharp chin, and seductively licked his lips. The jalopy groaned and complained when Miriam dove into it. Cre-thunk! The heavy steel door slammed shut. The old worn-out seatbelt, already buckled in police fashion, hung loose and caught her arm which prevented contact with the ignition. Miriam tugged against the entangled seatbelt as Jeremy barreled across the lot. Frenetic yanks and jerks unwrapped the belt enough to crank the vehicle. The engine whimpered and whined. Thung! Jeremy landed on the hood, slid off the side, and wrenched the handle of the locked door. “Gimme my shoe you bitch!” Crack! Crack! His elbow slammed into the driver’s side window and splintered the glass into a spider’s web. Burnt rubber and oil overcame the sweet scent of charred steak and vegetables as the vehicle fired up. Miriam stomped on the gas and tore across the lot. She flipped Jakob and his mistress the bird as she yelled, “thanks again jackass!” The jalopy bouncedand squealed out of the lot and into the street as it dodged traffic and sideswiped a bench on the opposite sidewalk before straightening out to speed off while a shoeless Jeremy gave chase among the recently gridlocked vehicles. “You asshole!” Jeremy screamed at Jakob as the suit rushed back to the company van where he snatched the keys from the driver, shoved the old man to the ground, and stole the van to pursue the shoe thief. Miriam dialed nine-one-one as she raced through traffic. “Hello? Yeah, four Cedar Street. Two oh seven! I repeat four Cedar. There’s a kidnapped kid or a body. He might be dea . . .” The old hatchback complained as she cut a turn and listened to the operator. “No! Listen! There’s a boy, he’s been kidnapped, two oh seven, you understand me? Dammit, will you shut up and listen? This is Miriam Nim. I’m . . .” The vehicle shuttered as it sped into a rural neighborhood and barely missed a pair of bicyclists on the street. “Get off the fuckin road! No, not you. Look! If you’d shut up and listen! Yes! I’m a PI and . . .” Miriam introduced her favorite finger to the driver of a car in the intersection of a four way stop as she skidded around and past. “Dammit woman! I work for, you know what? Never mind! Four Cedar! Send units! Now!” She hung up and plowed into the white picket fence in Jeremy’s yard. The lawn stood no chance against the aggressive sliding stop. Miriam popped out of the still running vehicle with pistol drawn, charged up the stairs of the porch, and kicked the door in.
