Indicators πŸ§ͺπŸŒŠπŸ¦‘πŸ“ˆπŸ“‰ Models help track our ocean’s vital signs #OceanAcidification #BeringSea

Trends provide the big picture
Tracking indicators over decades reveals the long-term direction and speed of changing ocean chemistry. Trends move us from a snapshot of OA to a historical record.

Snapshot showing trend for Surface pH is a common way to quantify ocean acidification. Here, we see the past five years shows a significant decreasing trend in pH, which indicates that OA is increasing in the Eastern Bering Sea.

This week we are analyzing seawater samples collected by @uafairbanks.bsky.social oceanographers partnering with the National Park Service to detect #OceanAcidification in #GlacierBay and #WrangellStElias.

www.nps.gov/articles/000...

University of Alaska Fairbanks oceanographers deploy equipment to observe seawater properties such as temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen. The vertical sample bottles collect seawater at various depth to later analyze for chlorophyll, nutrients, and carbonate chemistry.

This oceanographic research station is in a glacial fjord in the northeast Pacific offshore Alaska.

Our Gulf of Alaska #OceanAcidification buoy site has mostly observed below average sea surface temperatures in 2026 when compared to our full record. πŸ§ͺπŸŒŠπŸ¦‘πŸ›Ÿ #GAKOA

Project
Mooring site GAKOA in the northern Gulf of Alaska is led by University of Alaska Fairbanks Ocean Acidification Research Center (UAF OARC) to observe seawater carbon dioxide to detect ocean acidification. All surface observations at GAKOA show a strong seasonal signal.

Figures
The top panel shows observations of the difference in the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (Ξ”pCOβ‚‚) between one meter above the sea-air interface and one meter below the sea-air interface. A negative value indicates the seawater pCOβ‚‚ is lower than air, and the site is a carbon dioxide sink to the atmosphere. Seawater carbon dioxide is consumed by phytoplankton during the summer, resulting in more negative Ξ”pCOβ‚‚ values.

The middle panel is surface seawater temperature (SST), observed by a seaCAT sensor moored one meter below the sea-air interface.

The bottom panel is surface seawater salinity (SSS), observed by a seaCAT sensor moored one meter below the sea-air interface.

The dark black line is the site average, the gray lines are the final and archived data from previous deployments (i.e., 2011-2025), and the blue dots are the 3-hour, raw data from the current deployment.

The ocean absorbs 27% of human caused carbon dioxide emissions. As the COβ‚‚ reacts with seawater, ocean pH decreases causing #OceanAcidification. πŸ§ͺπŸŒŠπŸ¦‘
