The full report sets out the comparison in detail, including where each service meets the @copim.bsky.social Open Archiving Criteria.

We hope it can be useful to #OAbooks publishers thinking through their own archiving and preservation strategies.

This principle also underpins the Thoth Open Archiving Network: using Thoth metadata and publishing workflows to help distribute #OAbooks and their metadata across multiple preservation locations, rather than relying on a single repository or service.

Preservation is often treated as a question of keeping files safe over the long term. For #OAbooks, though, there also is another question: will those files, and the metadata describing them, remain openly accessible and reusable over time?

2/8

What does it mean to preserve an #openaccess book, and how can we make sure that what is preserved remains open?

As part of our work in the @copim.bsky.social Open Book Futures project, we’ve been looking closely at platforms available for archiving #OAbooks

What does sustainability mean for #OAbooks ? #OASPA2026

For @copim.bsky.social, more than financial viability: it is about community governance, relationships across the ecosystem, fair recognition of labour, and resilience – 'scaling small' rather than growing big. More: doi.org/10.21428/785...

Our framework is particularly intended to support small-to-medium-sized independent scholar-led publishers, as well as institutional, library and university presses, in thinking through realistic and sustainable approaches to archiving.

#OABooks #archiving 5/6

The criteria consider access to content and metadata alongside preservation practice, versioning, associated materials, transparency, governance and infrastructural independence.

In other words: preserving openness involves more than simply preserving files. #OABooks #archiving 4/6

Developed through the now-ended @copim Open Book Futures project, the eight Copim Open Archiving Criteria bring these questions together into a practical framework for publishers and infrastructure providers.

#OABooks #archiving 3/6

For #openaccess publications, preservation raises questions beyond long-term storage.

Will content remain accessible? Will metadata stay open and reusable? Can preservation processes be understood and verified? And how resilient are the infrastructures we rely on?

#OABooks #archiving 2/6

What should “open” archiving look like for open access publications?

The @copim.bsky.social Open Archiving Criteria offer a framework for thinking about preservation not only as keeping publications safe, but as ensuring that their openness can be sustained over time.
