Columbus was 15th century Maga. #IndigenousPeople'sDay.

Columbus summarized.

1. Enslaved 500 Taíno in 1495. 200 died on the voyage. The rest were sold in Spain.

2. He imposed a quarterly gold tribute on every Taíno over 14. Failure to pay resulted brutal reprisals. Whole villages punished.

3. Forced labor in the mines broke up families and wrecked Taíno society. Within decades, a population in the hundreds of thousands collapsed.

4. When natives "defiled" Christian images his brother Bartholomew burned them at the stake.

Deception and night raids were standard.

5. He ruled so badly his own Spanish colonists rebelled. In 1500 the Crown's investigator arrested him and his brothers and shipped them to Spain in chains.

6. He didn't "discover" the Americas. Millions of people already called it home. The Taíno were there first.
