Today’s #BirdOfTheDay Alt theme is #LongBeak, birds with long beaks.

A white ibis standing in grass, which forms the background. The bird's body is shown in right profile, but its head is turned back to the right so that the left side of its face shows. Its long, pink beak with mud on the tip is highlighted agains the pure white body.

@alan678.bsky.social's #BirdOfTheDay is #Black&Red, Alt theme is #LongBeak

An Australian white ibis about to land, beak open as it calls. Purists may quibble about the red being skin not feathers, but I think the long bill is safe, and the black wingtips and wispy back feathers.

Perhaps this is not my best side, but us white ibises have some of the #BestBeaks around! #BirdOfTheDay #birds #ibis #birdphotography #ECK 🪶

Neck and head portrait of a white ibis, looking right at the camera, in Bonita Springs FL. Its long curved black and red beak drops down from its red face in front of its white neck.

Per Helen @helenbennett.bsky.social, today’s #BirdOfTheDay is #BestBeaks, striking colours, bold profiles or interesting shaped beaks.
The Alt theme is #YellowElements, yellow found on any bird.

A head and neck photo of a White Ibis, which has a distinctive down-curved red-orange bill and light blue eyes. Blue water in the background.

Interesting information:
This ibis is almost entirely white, save for the black-tipped wings and brilliant reddish pink legs and bill. The bare skin around their blue eyes is also reddish pink. Juveniles (fall through winter) are brown above and white below with a streaky brown neck. The legs and bill of juveniles are orange-pink. Immatures (first summer birds) are splotchy brown and white above as they molt into adult plumage.
An ibis is a medium-sized wading bird with a long neck, spindly legs, and a distinctive long, downward-curving bill. Colors vary by species. The White Ibis is brilliant white with black wingtips, the Scarlet Ibis is vivid red, and the Glossy Ibis has dark, iridescent chestnut and purple feathers. They live in warm regions worldwide, frequenting shallow wetlands, marshes, lakes, mangroves, and mudflats.
Ibises are carnivorous. They eat aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans (like crabs and shrimp), insects, small fish, and occasionally small frogs or snakes. Ibises are highly social birds. They forage, fly, and breed in large, sometimes vast, colonies.
They usually build compact stick nests low in trees, shrubs, or dense reeds near water, often sharing nesting spaces with herons or spoonbills.

Ever heard a "hadeda"?

I grew up hearing the loudest bird in Africa, the #Hadeda ( #Ibis), named after the cacophonous/trumpeting sound of its "haa-haa-haa-de-dah” call.

For full effect, turn up the volume on your phone -

I was starting to feel a little down about not being able to leave my house much when I heard faint “honking.” I checked outside and a flock of ibis were foraging. They make these adorable little honking noises. Here’s a blurry pic 😆
